Saint of Origin

With a lot on the line with this year’s Saint of Origin, the Year 12 boys stepped up to the challenge to take on our cross-town rivals, Santa Sabina. The series kicked off with a netball match on Santa’s home ground. The girls put forward their best team of players, and all odds were against the Year 12 team, but nothing was going to stop our fierce netball team from putting up a strong fight. Our boys came out of the gates firing, taking an early lead in the match. However, with not much experience on the netball court, and not aware of many of the rules, the boys suffered from many setbacks and the girls started to catch up. With the game being tied at full time, we went into overtime, which saw the athletic abilities of the team ensure that we were able to come out victorious on the afternoon. Already being 1-0 up in the series, everyone was full of confidence coming into Rounds 2 and 3, Volleyball and Debating on our home ground.

Once again, Volleyball was unfamiliar territory for the boys, and despite their greatest attempts to score some points, the Santa girls proved too strong on the afternoon, with our boys suffering a disheartening loss. Despite this, the support from the rest of the school on the sidelines was remarkable and lifted the spirits of all involved.

With the series now tied at 1-1, the Debating team knew that they had to put on a show in order to take home the shield. After an overwhelming amount of support to watch the annual ‘Debate of Origin’ videos, the debaters were sent on their way to prepare for the debate. With a full Robson Auditorium for the Senior As, and a full Hall for the Senior Bs, our boys debated strong and hard with our opposition. In what were extremely close and tough debates, both SPC teams managed to come out victorious, taking home the shield for the third time out of four years. The amount of support across all three events was amazing and helped all involved in the actual playing of the sports and debate to bring home the trophy. After a great series this year, we can only pass on the baton to the current Year 11s to continue our winning ways next year.
