Illness and Sick Children

In accordance with the Department of Health regulations, children with infectious diseases must NOT come to class for certain specified exclusion periods. Infectious disease guidelines for control are available at https://www2.health.vic.gov.au/public-health/infectious-diseases minimum exclusion from primary schools.

Another useful website to refer to is the Better Health Channel website https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au. In cases of minor ailments, parents/carers may use their own judgement about attendance. Children who become sick during the day at school will be allowed to rest in the sick bay while parents/carers are notified by telephone.

The most important action school communities can take to reduce the risk of transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19), is to ensure that any unwell students remain at home, even with the mildest symptoms.

Accidents/Sudden Illness

For injuries of a minor nature, first aid will be administered at school, following the guidelines in our First Aid policy document. Please note for any head injury the school is required to notify the parent/carer. If a serious illness or accident occurs, every effort will be made to contact the parent/carer.

However, it may be necessary to seek immediate medical service. It is therefore essential that school records are kept accurate.

Parents are expected to keep the school informed of emergency contact numbers and all other pertinent medical information.

It is important to let the office know if your child has had an injury or using crutches. This may include creating a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan specific to your child's needs.

Medication

A ‘Medication Authority’ form will be available from the school office at any time. When a student requires medication to be administered during school hours this form is to be completed by a parent/carer and provided to the First Aid Officer along with the medication. All medication must be labelled by a pharmacist with the student name, dosage and time for administration (including Panadol or Zyrtec).

All medication will be stored in, and administered from the school First Aid Room, in accordance with the ENPS Medication policy and Victorian DET guidelines.

Please supply all medications in their original packaging, enclosed in a plastic zip lock bag or container with your child’s name clearly written on the front. Collection of any used or unused medication is the responsibility of the parent/carer.

Head Lice

It is the responsibility of the parents (as agreed to in writing as a part of the enrolment process) to ensure that the school is immediately notified about a head lice infection and about treatment used and when it commenced, prior to return to school.

Please check your child’s hair regularly for head lice and treat immediately if you find any sign of lice. If your child does have head lice at any time, please inform your child’s teacher. The school follows Department of Health guidelines and when appropriate will send a standard note out to home groups stating that a case of head lice has been reported and a reminder to parents to check hair. The Department of Education's Head Lice Policy sets out the requirements for schools to prevent and control the transmission of head lice and can be viewed at https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/head-lice/policy
