Year 1

Visual Art 

The Term 2 Central Idea is called ‘People express themselves through stories’ which integrates  with the Transdisciplinary theme- 'How we express ourselves'. The Unit focuses on the way Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, beliefs and values are expressed through their story telling. 

Students Create

• Colourful serpent paintings inspired by the story of the Rainbow Serpent capturing traditional pattern of dot and line. 

• A Clay pinch pot turtle applying modelling technique and using clay tools to apply pattern onto the turtle 'shell'.  

• An Australian native animal collage inspired by the Aboriginal story ‘Tiddalick the Frog’. They demonstrated an original animal design and effective collage technique.   

• A Paper plate weaving inspired by Aboriginal basket weaving, exploring basic weaving technique and dexterity. 

Japanese  

 Term Focus

Old stories of Japan/ Transportation in Japan/ Children’s day festival in May. 

 

Unit of Inquiry - 'Where We Are In  Place and Time' 

Transport changes over time – the different forms of transport.

 

Unit of Inquiry -'How We Express Ourselves' 

People express themselves through stories.  

The way we explore culture, beliefs and values through stories. 

 

The student will be able to: 

  • Explain why Japanese people celebrate Children’s Day and how they celebrate the festival.
  • Say a phrase in the story in Japanese  and perform a puppet show of KINTARO.   
  • Say some names of transport in Japanese.
  • Explain what kind of transport they have in Japan and tell the differences between Australian transport and Japanese one. 

MUSIC 

How we Express Ourselves 

  

This term the students are focusing on ways music is used to tell stories and how music can help to explore culture, beliefs and values. There will also be a focus on the staff and formal notation as a form of communication, from one person to the next.  

  

Students will: 

  • Explore ways of representing pitch in written form.  
  • Learn to recognise the pitch letter names of E&G and play them on the chime bars. 
  • Learn about composition by writing notes on a staff and creating short tunes. 
  • Practice tunes on the chime bars...noting that pitch can move in steps, jumps or stay the same. 
  • Sing and play together and communicate their ideas to an audience. 
  • Finish off the term with a polished performance of a class composition about ‘Stories’ for their Learning Task. 
  • Explore the idea that just as stories have a pattern or form, so does music. 
  • Tell their perspective on a favourite way to hear a timeless tale...ballet? Song? Musical? Story? Dance?   The children will experience examples of these. 
  • Enjoy singing songs related to Unit of Inquiry.  E.g. ‘Those Magnificent Men’. 

Physical Education 

 The term 2 unit we are focusing on is 'How we express ourselves'. 

  

We will continue to practice, control and master the Fundamental Motor Skills of throwing, catching and bouncing. 

  • Gymnastics: The students will explore movement through balance, rotation, flight and demonstrate various combinations of these both on the floor and using equipment.        

  

     Term Focus 

  • When developing their Fundamental Motor Skills the children will use a variety of equipment and various sized play balls to widen their motor experience.  
  • The skills learnt will be incorporated into minor team games, relays and activities.  
  • Gymnastics – movements that develop balance, strength and ability to form various rotations and landings. We are also developing perseverance, confidence and resilience with this program.

Causation-understanding that a particular action will cause a particular response.

Library                                                                                                           

 All students are encouraged to borrow books from the Library. The focus is on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children also have the opportunity to practise their borrowing skills and further their love of reading. 

The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information.
