HANDS ON LEARNING

Hands on Learning students would like to send a GREAT BIG SHOUT OUT to RYOBI to say THANK YOU for our new tools which they so generously donated to the program. As a lot of our tools are starting to get old, these new tools are very much appreciated. Students were so excited to get these tools, we had to use them immediately. The tools will enable the creation of quality product for the whole school community. So once again THANK YOU RYOBI.

STEM

Yr 7/8 STEM

In Semester Two of STEM students from Wexford and Tallis have been completing STEM Challenges at home in remote as well as at school.  The first STEM Challenge involved students designing a structure that could hold weight using only paper and tape.

In the second challenge this term students worked in teams to design a structure using play doh, toothpicks, pegs and skewers that would be able to withstand an earthquake.  Each team could score points based on the height of their structure, it’s aesthetics and how long it was able to withstand an earthquake.

We would also like to congratulate the Peacock and Hendy 7/8 students on the completion of their Mini Golf Design projects in Semester 1.  Throughout the Semester the students completed a design portfolio which included researching Mini Golf hole designs (along with a trip to Curlewis Mini Golf). They brainstormed their own designs, created a final design and then produced their final model of their Mini Golf hole.  The template and shape for their hole were laser cut, the terrain was created using ‘plaster of paris’, and then they created the features, some of which were 3D printed, cut out of modelling foam or designed to move with the help of Microbits.

Northern Stars Auskick Gala Day

Here is an excerpt from the Geelong Cats website on their Auskick Gala:

An Auskick Gala Day brought out young stars from Corio and North Shore last week.
Before Victoria’s latest lockdown, the young footballers gathered at North Shore Football Club for the Northern Stars Auskick Gala Day. There was a visit from Half-Cat and Clawdia as participants enjoyed a series of footy drills, as well as the AFL Barwon Climb and Slide and inflatable goal posts, followed by a sausage sizzle.
The gala day was the culmination of a series of Auskick clinics, which had been run at the Northern Bay College campuses, intended as an introduction to the Auskick environment, and was a joint effort between AFL Barwon, the Geelong Cats and North Shore Football Club, with some help from SEDA College. IMPACT part 1

Just before lockdown 5.0, our IMPACT students experienced an amazing day and night by visiting the Princess Theatre in Melbourne to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Travelling up to Melbourne on the bus, students watched the first show at 2:00pm followed by part 2 at 7:30pm. In between the two shows, the students enjoyed a wonderful meal at Mrs Parmas which was very generously subsidised by Ken Harrison,The NBC Challenge Board Chairman. The magic and theatrics of the show was marvelled by all and a day / night to remember.

IMPACT part 2

As part of a project called Taking Over the Airways, the IMPACT students wrote their own radio story, including creating all the sound effects as well as the storytelling of the story. Over the term they worked with artists from the Geelong Arts Centre, Bay FM, a script writer and sound artist, who all assisted with learning how to write their own radio story. The most exciting part was going into the radio studio - Don't Poke the Bear, to produce their script, which has been heard by many people around Geelong already.

EXTENDED SCHOOL DAY

With a slow start to our Term 3 program, we finally got one week in, and it was wonderful to see everyone back at Extended School Day. With 514 students attending each week this is the biggest program we have had, and it was magical to see students engaging with students across the college and programs them may not have experienced before.

The sign up for Term 4 will be coming home soon and I look forward to sharing experiences with your children then.
