Welcome Back

What a busy and interesting start back to term 3. With so much going on already this term it is a credit to all students for showing so much resilience and being able to adjust on the run and engage in remote learning for the 8 days. I’m sure everyone is glad to be back learning and having  fun at school. Fingers crossed it stays that way and students can enjoy another busy but exciting term.  This term the student’s curriculum topics cover Biological Science / Design and Technology ( HASS ), Information Reports (Writing ), Non - Fiction texts ( Reading ) and also Fractions and Decimals ( Numeracy ). The specialist subjects for this term include LOTE ( Indonesian ), Performing Arts and Physical Education.

HASS - Inquiry Topics

This term in HASS the 3-6 students will be looking at biological science. In 3/4,  students will be researching and discovering information around living and non living things. In 5/6 students will be learning about environments that have different features, Different organisms that live in these environments and how each have different characteristics to help them survive. Within this topic , it will give students the opportunity for students to focus on using related scientific language when researching and writing informative reports. There will also be opportunity to use a design cycle to predict , test and refine different scientific experiments.

Unfortunately, for the year 6 students they weren’t able to present their Kids Thrive showcase as planned. Even though this was the case, students have still been encouraged to add the finishing touches to their community actions and complete the program as best as they can given restrictions that have been put in place.

Excursions

This term’s excursions look fantastic and filled with fun. The excursions aren’t too far away and have quickly snuck up on us. For the 3/4s, this term excursion will be to the Ballarat Wildlife Park.  The Ballarat Wildlife Park has a range of different animals for the students to view. These include  Kangaroos, Koalas, Wombats, Tasmanian Devils, Eagles, Giant Tortoises, Crocodiles and Alligators to a large display of Lizards and both venomous and non-venomous Snakes. The 5/6 excursion is to the Melbourne Aquarium. This will give the students the opportunity to see some of the worlds most incredible animals, such as penguins , huge sharks, massive crocodiles and mysterious stingrays and thousands of tropical fish. Sounds like a great day to be had.

Book Week

Book week is coming up. During this time schools and public libraries spend one week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. The dates for Book Week is August 23 to August 27. The theme for this year’s book week is  “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. There will be activities happening across all campuses throughout the week which will be exciting.  Each campus having a dress up day as part of the book week theme. Looking forward to seeing all those fantastic and creative dress ups.

Chromebooks

Over the past two terms students have developed an understanding on a range of different learning platforms on the Chromebooks. These platforms include Paygrade, Google Sites and also Tinkercad.

Miss Vicki has been running workshops across the college and teaching students how to use these new learning platforms. Google Sites gives the students a chance to create their own learning portfolio online and then publish it as a website of their own within the NBC community.

Tinkercad is an online platform that students can use for 3D design, electronics and also coding. This platform will also give the opportunity for students to explore, design and create their own 3D animal at the end of the HASS topic.
