Opinion Writing in Year 8

This term in Year 8 English, as part of our Writers Workshop unit, our students learned about opinion writing.  We read the opinions of writers on a variety of current issues such as facial recognition technology in schools, the live export trade, using cultural icons as advertising spaces to name a few.  We noticed how writers use research and language to persuade an audience to their point of view. Students then drafted their own opinion pieces, participated in conferencing, peer and self-assessment before submitting their polished opinion columns.  Of course, writing for real audiences is preferable to writing for the teacher, so it is with great pleasure that I invite you to read the opinion pieces of Ivy Hinkley (8I) and Emma Salmon (8I).
