A message from the Principal

Bringing Reconciliation and Education Weeks together...

This week sees our school acknowledge and celebrate two very important events.

We are currently in the middle of Education Week. Now in its 77th year, Education Week aims to positively profile and celebrate the strengths and achievements of Victoria's government education sector.

This year’s theme is ‘Building Connections’. The theme celebrates the connections between schools and local communities and strengthens bonds with families and carers.

Education Week is an opportunity for all primary and secondary schools, higher education, and early childhood services to showcase how they are building connections with the community around them.

The theme of this year lends itself pefectly to another imporatnt 'week' which we are about to enter into. National Reconciliation Week.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. we can think of no better way to 'Build Connections' than by learning about Reconciliation and the connections between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June.

Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021, More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action.

Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation.

To celebrate both of these important events, our students this week are involved in learning and activities about the meaning of reconciliation and the culture of the Boon Wurrung, the traditional owners of the land where we live and learn.

We will be sharing this learning at a special assembly this Friday morning and are excited that we will be joined on the morning by N’arweet Carolyn Briggs AM. Carolyn is a Boon Wurrung senior elder and is the chairperson and founder of the Boon Wurrung Foundation. She has been involved in developing and supporting opportunities for Indigenous youth and Boon Wurrung culture for over 50 years.

Carolyn will be performing a Welcome to Country for our community at the assembly and we will look forward to a performance by our school orcheatrs of the 'Bunjil Song', performed in our local Indigenous langauge.

We hope you can join us.
