DAV Debating

Scarlett Hehir, Michael Williams and Annalise Somerville competed in Round 2 of the DAV Debating competition held at Notre Dame College in Shepparton on 26 May.

"What a great day we had with one round of hard debating won and the other lost at Notre Dame. Two well planned arguments and meetings planned late at night resulted as a success. A big day with lots of laughs and McDonalds for lunch as well as a hot chocolate to get us going in the morning. Bring on the next round!"

Annalise Somerville

The topics debated during the round were:

12 year olds should be able to vote.

Kids should be paid pocket money.

CIS Athletics

Let's wish Nate Ludlow, Sam McCleary, Ben Anthony, Jilly Jones, Jaymi Clancy, Jake Clancy and Dylan Scoble good luck as they compete at the CIS Cross Country at Eastern Creek Raceway on the 10th June.

Football

"Sun Country Cup: the localised Australian Rules Football tournament that enveloped the town of Moama on the 13th of May. The schools first XVIII, our three best substitutions, team coach, team manager and Mr Cadd set our sights on the Moama footy club oval, with spirits high and team hopes zeroed into the victory of one game in particular, against Echuca College.

We took our place on one of the grand stands as we watched St Joe's Catholic School demonstrate the well-oiled machine that is their warm up procedure, while College were ambitiously having punts from just outside 50, and Rochester Secondary College was just arriving. Mr Cadd gestured toward the grand stand for us to take our seats. It was the speech that followed that set the benchmark for the day; he gently reminded us that Moama Grammar had never lost a game to Echuca College, and a gentle suggestion that the last squad to play (2019) had walked home with only one win under their belts. We knew the task ahead of us - we had to beat College and in order to out-do the Schools 2019 efforts, we would need to come out on top of either Joey's or Rochester Secondary, each of us knowing that watching the Joe's team in the background, they would be the tougher opponent of the two.

With the use of two ovals, Jack Eddy was the other oval played on the roster, we were presented with the following schedule: we would play Rochester first, followed by College, both games to take place on Jack Eddy, and to finish out the day we would play St Joe's on the Centre stage (Moama Football Ground). After the team had been allocated jumpers, the warm up was taken by PDHPE staff member, Anthony McMahon. With no sign of Rochester on the field until late into our warmup, the teams confidence was hopeful.

As the game began, Rochester kicked off with an early lead in the form of a goal within two minutes. They followed up with a point shortly thereafter; it was probably not their game plan, but Moama would keep them to this mere 7 point total all game. Moama followed up swiftly with a goal to Dylan Jardine, an opening goal. We finished the game with a commanding lead of 38 points at the final siren, leaving the score 7 - 45.

The be all and end all game was up next - Echuca College! We knew what was at stake. Never before had the Grammar squad returned over the white line defeated. It began well with Adam Pulsoni scoring a goal within the first few minutes. We had a commanding and relieving lead at the half time whistle. Shortly into the second half, Kaleb Williams made a remarkable run from the back pocket, putting his team mate James Mawson (who later went on to punt two out on the full) to good use. At the end of the match, Adam walked off the field with an astounding tally of 24 points, and the team was yet again walking off the ground with the only in we needed, 46 to 30 at the final whistle.

With spirits high we strolled over toward the main Colosseum, Moama Football Ground. If we could win this game we would be regarded as one of a very elite few Grammar teams to return home undefeated. Morale was high as the team snacked on their lunch and we anxiously waited for the Joe's squadron to wander out of the change room. Once the game was underway, the chemistry and on ground experience that the Joe's team had amassed after many years of playing together became apparent, starting off with an early goal ( <45 seconds) and another swiftly thereafter. However it would be a surprise moment of brilliance that wound see the former Border Raider Star, freshly recovered from a career ending groin strain, Andrew Martin punt the Grammars first 6. It became apparent that the grammar team had had upwards of 80 minutes together in the second half, as we limited Joe's to only a 17 point lead at the end. Yet that was a victory in itself as we were the only team on the day to keep Joe's under 30, as well as the first squad to score against the undefeated team.

Players Waugh George and Will McCartney really showed how much the game meant to us by risking it all and both returning to school the next day with game related elbow fractures. As a team we would like to send our thanks to the organisers of the Sun Country Cup, as well as Moama Cricket Club for letting us use the ovals, and all the teachers, students and staff that came out to support, organise and motivate all the teams playing".
