Principals Report

I have had the privilege of reading every child’s report during Week 8/9. Please be aware that your child will have a sealed envelope containing their Semester 1 School Report in their bag this Friday afternoon (18/6/21) it has been a very special opportunity for me to read your child’s self-reflections. Interesting for me, as the Principal, what our students have been declaring as their favourite ‘thing/s’ about school. These reflections provide insight and becomes important as we shape our school, to meet the needs of our children and their families. I feel very proud of our Guyra Central School staff, the care and commitment that they have put into providing personalised feedback to our students, parents/carers and extended family, each Semester, is a celebration.

For those parents/carers of our Big Picture Education students you are already into your fourth interaction with your students learning during 2021, in collaboration with Learning Plans and attending Exhibitions. This is the second round of Exhibitions of authentic learning to a group of learning partners during 2021.  It has been a privilege to be able to attend previous individual demonstrations, Exhibitions of Learning and I look forward to attending a selection of our Exhibitions during Week 9 and Week 10. Thanks to Mr Andrew Murray and his team of Big Picture Advisors for their incredible commitment to our new curriculum model. Early data tells us that this program is already worthy of support and celebration.

Our Guyra Central School sports people continue to shine. Each week our students climb out of the buses with stories of great success. I am always proud to hear the feedback from attending staff and community about the citizenship that our students demonstrate when out on the ‘road’. To all of our students and the staff who work so hard to support and provide skill development for our teams congratulations and thank you.

Hosting the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, New England Local Final, 2021, at Guyra Central School, was another great way of reopening our school to our community and beyond. It is always great to get positive feedback and this was certainly forthcoming from our visiting parents/carers and extended family members and their children. Both our own parents/carers and those from visiting schools were very generous with their support and thanks for the great efforts of our students and staff. In particular, thanks to our Assistant Principal Mrs Bronwyn Paull.

We are heading towards the end of Term 2 2021. Staff Development Day for staff is Monday 12th July 2021 with students returning to school on Tuesday 13th July 2021.  During the beginning of Term 3 2021 we will take the opportunity to embrace NAIDOC Week and Education Week (Week 3 Term 3) and we will provide our parents/carers with opportunities to engage in our school during these celebrations.

The first of our Year 6 into Year 7 Transition days commenced in Week 9 Term 2. This is the first of several during Semester 2 2021. It was great to see Guyra Central School Year 6 students mixing with our Year 6 students from our partnership primary schools. Thanks to our parents who attended on the day and to our staff who worked so hard to provide great activities to give our students tasters of Secondary school life. Miss Tracey Condrick is our Year 6 into Year 7 Coordinator/Year Advisor and Ms Meagan Vidler is our Stage 3 into Stage 4 Assistant Principal/Head Teacher.

During Week 8 we hosted our Kindergarten 2022 information evening, and I thank our parents who braved the cold to attend. Mrs Sjaan Mitchell hosted our parents and their children, and we have been busily completing enrolments for our future Kindergarten students in preparation for the commencement of our transition program Term 2 2021. Thank you to Mrs Mitchell for her efforts in this space.

Have a great and safe time during the school break and I look forward to catching up with everyone in Term 3.

Mrs Michelle Nicholson

Proud Principal
