Grade 6 Health Day - Personal Hygiene

Last Tuesday all of Grade 6 Students took part in a Health Day of which the focus was on personal hygiene. Given COVID and our recent experience with gastro the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene practices have been highlighted.  Over the course of the day, the students were learning about different aspects of personal hygiene, why it is important and strategies on how to maintain good personal hygiene.  To do this students engaged in a range of activities including brainstorming, designing their own personal hygiene product, exploring cross contamination, evaluating handwashing techniques and discovering areas for improvement, prioritising hygiene products and determining frequency for different hygiene practices.  Here is a little sample from the day:

On Tuesday last week the Grade 6 students had their first unit of health day for the year on hygiene. We used a product called “Glitterbug”, which is where we put liquid on our hands that looked a lot like sunscreen. We rubbed it on until it dried and then we used a blue light torch to see all the product on our hands. We had 4 stations. There were 4 students who demonstrated how to wash their hands with other products . Zion D used just water, Sukhi K used soap and water to wash her hands , Lucy M used antibacterial wipes and Roman M used hand sanitizer. We tested which one of them worked the best clearing all the “Glitterbug”.  The best was Sukhi K who used soap and water because when we put the blue light torch back on her hand most of the “Glitterbug” lotion was gone! After we did that, everybody in our class had a go afterwards. We found out that most of the traces of “Glitterbug” were all in our cuticles and up our wrists. But we also found out that soap is the most efficient. So in the real world always use soap to wash your hands and when you wash your hands really scrub them so they are sparkling clean!!!
