Chaplain's Message

The Hope of Easter

Chaplain, Mrs Sarah Pollitt

The sky turned black as Jesus gave up his life on the cross of Calvary.

The Garden of Gethsemane was the site of Jesus’s great battle where his tears were as drops of blood and his words “Not my will Father but yours” opened the flood gates of the events of Good Friday, leading onto the Resurrection on Easter morning. He faced the desertion of his friends and supporters, a violent, humiliating trial, and the emotional and physical agony of crucifixion.

It is worth reflecting on a third element of his crucifixion; the spiritual agony! Jesus spent 33 years in closeness, actually one, with His Father. His acceptance of the events to come meant he faced complete separation from God as he carried the sin of the world on his shoulders to the grave. We wonder at the pain of the Father who allowed his son to bear the agony as Jesus fought for our souls. He won the battle. He conquered death!

Jesus experienced the release of victory on Easter morning as he rose from the grave. He showed us that no matter how dark, our hope is in him. He has been through it all, he understands.

May we see the Easter message with fresh eyes – may we receive and share his unconditional love. May it be in our giving, in our loving and in our hearts as we care for each other and the broken hearted as we take his message of hope into the year.

My love and best wishes for Easter.
