Italian

ITALIAN 2021   Term 1

I am truly grateful that all students have been able to attend school this year and have actively participated in Italian classes. Grades Prep, One and Two have got off to a great start and are more immersed in learning Italian.

Throughout Term 1, the Italian program’s goals are to facilitate the ability to understand and speak basic phrases such as greeting someone according to their gender, age and time of the day.  Each student started the term by choosing some of their own personal goals, known as obiettivi in Italian. Grade 2 students have displayed more fluency and capability in asking and responding to simple questions based on how they are feeling, their age and what they like.  Grades Prep and Ones are improving and building this fluency.

All Italian junior school students have also enjoyed participating in simplified games and role-plays using self-made puppets to practise taught simple phrases. Also, all Italian students have engaged in making their mask for Carnevale once again and explored its significance, which they continue to enjoy.

Prep students have confidently displayed their ability to adapt to class outines.  They now know Italy is a country that looks like the shape of a boot and how to get there, as it is on the other side of the world.  Other general information taught are the colours of the Italain flag, some traditional foods, colours and counting from 0 to 10 in Italian.  They will continue to practise introducing themselves and expressing their emotions and what they like. Students enjoyed playing Tombola, which is bingo,  to learn the numbers from 1 to 10, however students require further practise.

Grade 1 students have revised commonly used phrases to greet others according to the age of the person and time of day as well as introduce themselves, ask and respond to how they are feeling, how old they are, and what they like.  Students have revised counting from 0 to 10 and are developing their counting skills to 20. These students have also revised the location of Italy  in the world and recognised its specific shape. as well as learning that Rome is the capital city.

Grade 2 students have continued to revise greeting, geographical knowledge including which continent and hemisphere Italy lies within. Students love to make their Carnevale mask deepening their cultural knowledge. Grade 2 students made a puppet, pupazzo, and this was their vehicle to revise and extend general language skills. Students constructed a simple self descriptive text that includes who they are, what they like, the suburb they live in and how old they are using simple sentence structures.  Each student confidently and accurately read their text out loud to me. Wonderful to hear their fluency.

Overall, a great start to the year and students are engaging in the language of Italian.
