Grade Two

Wow, it is hard to believe that we are already at the end of Term 1! Our Setting Up For Success program has ensured that our students feel welcome, accepted and secure in their learning environment. We have spent a lot of time getting to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses so that we can all support and encourage each other with our individual learning goals. We are now well and truly ready to thrive and are looking forward to developing our skills and knowledge further throughout the year.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been focusing on informative reading and writing. During our reading sessions, students have been using their skills to identify the difference between a fiction and non-fiction text. The students have been exposed to a variety of non-fiction texts and have been exploring some of their features. Towards the end of the term students worked through the writing process to produce a published information report on a community worker of their choice. Their reports were very impressive and the students enjoyed sharing their published pieces with their classmates.
Mathematics
In Mathematics students have explored time, focusing on naming and ordering the months and seasons and using a calendar to identify specific and important dates. Students have also had the opportunity to learn more about location through the use of ‘Google Maps’ and the Bee-Bots which are a programming tool used in Information Technology. In the final weeks of term we focused on simple addition facts and worded problems. The children had fun creating their own number stories for their classmates to solve. Exploring mental computation strategies is an ongoing concept during our Mathematics sessions. Every week we focus on a different strategy to ensure a thorough understanding of basic number facts and operations.
Integrated
During our integrated sessions we have been exploring ‘Community’. We commenced the unit with the Grade Two teachers dressing up and role-playing a number of different ‘Community Helpers’. We had a coach, a hairdresser, a florist, a police officer, a rubbish collector, a builder and a doctor. This provoked essential questions and inspired further investigation of the subject. Throughout the term we have also covered International Women’s Day and Harmony Week and have implemented a number of Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships activities.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Easter. We hope you all have a safe and restful holiday.
