Grade One

General:
All Grade 1 students have been working wonderfully in the closure of Term 1, settling in beautifully with the routines within their classrooms and amongst our Oatlands community. An event that we have been looking forward to, over the last few weeks, has been our Grade 1 Easter Bonnet Parade. Students have been exercising their creativity in working with their families in making festive Easter bonnets and special hats. We had a wonderful time performing in front of our families and Prep peers, as well as showcasing our Grade 1 masterpieces.
Writing:
Students have enjoyed engaging with our writing process, which enables them to use their own ideas and experiences when writing. They are learning how to reflect on and edit their own writing pieces to make improvements and conference with their teachers. All students have finished publishing their first piece of writing which will go into their Writer’s Gift.
Reading:
Students are becoming more independent while working in Reader’s Workshop groups. They are learning to think about and respond to books they read, collaborate and share their reading with other students. In addition, teachers have enjoyed listening to their students reading skills improve during conferencing and small group instruction. Our readers have shown their ability to transfer their skills and knowledge of the narrative structure in shared texts to enhance their narrative writing skills.
Maths:
In the past few weeks of Mathematics, students have been learning a number of concepts that have included addition, subtraction, shapes and halves. They have been engaging in hands-on and open-ended activities that are enabling problem solving skills and building upon their understanding of each concept. Some of the students’ highlights have been creating Shape Monsters and demonstrating real life connections with shapes and halving collections.
Integrated Studies:
As you are all aware, we are learning about Community in our Integrated Studies topic this term. We were very fortunate to have representatives from the Narre Warren Police Station, who undertook a Community Engagement presentation with all the Grade 1 students. The Constables discussed various ways that the police help the community, the shared equipment they carry and the different vehicles they may travel in. The students were thrilled to be able to take turns to hold real police badges and handcuffs.
