Foundation News
The Preps have settled into the routines of school and you can see they have gained their confidence in the classroom and outside. Our class routines are set in place now and they know what is expected of them each day. Sometimes we might add a surprise just to keep them guessing and add to the ‘FUN’ we have in Prep.
“A person’s a person, no matter how small,"
"Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted." Dr. Seuss
We have introduced a children’s literature session where we have been reading a few of our favourite books to the Preps. From old classics to new and exciting books. We hope to promote and nurture their love of books and maybe turn some of our favourites into their favourites. We will learn about the different parts of a book. Things such as call numbers, title pages, end papers, imprint pages and the role of the author and illustrator. Along with reading the books we get very crafty with our activities as we recreate a little part of the story line or a character from the book.
At Oatlands we have a ‘BUDDY’ program where either a grade 6 or grade 5 student is buddied up with a Prep child. This gives the Prep child a role model and someone to look out for them in the playground. It’s wonderful to watch as their bond grows. Each Prep class has met with their buddy class a few times and the excitement and smiles it creates when they meet proves to us what a rewarding program this is.
Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education teachers came to Oatlands to teach us all about friendship and being ‘bucket fillers, not bucket dippers. The lesson demonstrated to children strategies to enable to them make friends, be good friends and deal with their emotions through communication, persistence and positive talk.
All the Prep classes have visited the Kitchen and enjoyed meeting Rose. Making something by yourself adds to the excitement and FUN! Yes it was messy and chaotic but most of all it was YUM. Who doesn’t like eating their own cooking :) Rose taught the kids how to dry the dishes and where to put them away and how to wipe down their workspace. YES, cleaning up is part of the kitchen experience too! They all can’t wait for their next visit...
Thanks for a great response to our family unit and for helping us to get to know your child. We enjoyed seeing their ‘Me in Bag’ special things, their baby photos and learning about your family. Hard to believe we are at the end of term, enjoy the holidays, stay safe and we’ll see you in Term 2.
The Prep Team.
