Health and Physical Education

Health and PE

All the Arlington children have been participating in weekly movement and dance workshops as part of the Physical Education programme this term. These workshops are led by Charlotte Young who is using core movement principles with the children, such as breath, grounding and centering. The children are practising these principles through movement and mindfulness.

The 5s have been looking at how their body moves and that these movements can form a dance. We spent some time outside moving our bodies like animals. Fast like a cheetah, slow and heavy like an elephant, slithery like a snake, slow like a tortoise; interspersed with lots of kitten and rabbit movements! We read the story of the Hungry Caterpillar and created movements with our bodies to represent the egg on the leaf, the hungry eating actions of the caterpillar and the butterfly emerging from the cocoon. The children then worked in small groups to create their own sequence of movements to tell the story of the hungry caterpillar.

Basketball and Netball Skills

Alongside this, the 5s, as well as the 8s & 9s have been developing skills involved in moving and controlling various balls connected to more formal sports such as Netball and Basketball.

6s & 7s

The 6s & 7s are enjoying Charlotte’s class and making a connection with movement in nature during bush school on Wednesdays. We walk for close to 5km each week in nature, using our senses to connect with the natural environment.

Muscoloskeletal System

To compliment the physical/movement aspect of this programme, the 10s and 11s have been learning about the musculoskeletal system. As part of the teaching and learning, the children have identified and labelled the main bones that make up the skeletal system and discussed its functions. To consolidate their learning, the 10s and 11s will be helping their buddies in the kinder and the preps learn and identify various bones via playing a game of 'Skeleton says!' For the remainder of the term the children will be investigating the different types of joints that can be found in the human body and how muscles, together with the bones and joints, aid movement.
