bright futures

Hearty congratulations to the BSC Year 12 VCAL cohort!  They have finished their high school life off in style with the official launch of their  Moreland Youth Movement Project.

As readers will recall from Issue 5 of the Brunswick Star, this year the VCAL team tackled issues around racism and inclusion in our wider community as part of their learning. From inception,  their focus has drawn a remarkable team effort and achieved a range of valuable learning outcomes for the entire group.

One team of students  designed, planned and commissioned a mural to  be mounted on the eastern wall of the School Library  (facing the hockey field) for the benefit of the whole school.  The mural bears a map of the world and illustrates the many different origins of members of our community.  It is a constant reminder of the richly diverse community of which we choose to be part  - a community where we must value and respect each individual in order to that the community can thrive.

A second team of students  executed a public awareness campaign, and made a youtube video designed to support and empower victims of racism. In this project, they adopted the approach to pare back the message, to speak directly to the audience, and to deliver a truly authentic voice.  The result is powerful.

This partnership project between Moreland City Council, Brunswick Secondary College, Merri Health, Oxygen Advisory Committee, and Vic Health was celebrated earlier this term at the official launch. Representatives from the partner organisations, staff and students of BSC  joined to mark the occasion. The VCAL students  made their presentations and were duly recognised for their work.

The mural remains a legacy of the 2017 VCAL cohort, entrusted to the current and future members of the BSC community - so come along and see it soon!  The awareness campaign, including the youtube video, will continue to educate, empower and unit the wider community toward a bright future.

2017 VCAL Captain

The Year 12 VCAL students are really proud of their achievements this year.  We have worked as a team to produce a great outcome and we are all really pleased to be leaving our mark on BSC.   On behalf of the VCAL students, I take this opportunity to thank our partners  Merri Health, Moreland City Council, Oxygen Advisory Committee and Vic Health for their support and inspiration.  Many thanks  also to our VCAL teachers for their guidance throughout the year.

I have enjoyed being 2017 VCAL Captain this year - most especially the chance to lead a great group of students!
