Sports Report

As usual, the ICCES Winter Tour during the last few days of Term Two was a great success both on and off the sporting arenas. Congratulations and thank you to all the students for their efforts on this most worthwhile sporting tour and a special well done to the boys’ hockey team for being premiers and champions for the tournament. Thanks must go to all coaches and staff who came including Josh Kearney, Mr Guez, Mr MacLean, Miss Waldron and of course our number one cheer squad member Dr Hirst!

Individual team reports can be found in either this newsletter or next weeks.

On another note, as we head deep in this already cold and wet winter, can I please remind everyone that they need to stay committed to their teams in their chosen sport. Whether it be for training or a game, all students have committed to their team to play for the season and for you and the team to improve and have a full team then all players are required at training sessions and for matches.

Good luck to everyone for the new or remainder of the season playing. Go College!

Boys' Hockey

The final days of last term saw the Open team in Shepparton for the ICCES Winter Tour Carnival and the Under 16 teams play regular fixtures on the Saturday after school broke up for the holiday.

The senior team enjoyed an excellent carnival and, for the second year in a row, succeeded in winning the competition without conceding a goal.  The boys played exciting, controlled, skilled and team-oriented hockey to qualify for the final against Bacchus Marsh Grammar School.  The score in this game was 4-0 with Tom Verco scoring two goals and Tom Bunge and Liam McMaugh the others.  The boys controlled most of the first half and led 2-0 before our opponents mounted a strong fightback.  Pleasingly, the defence held firm with Will Allen and Andrew Robertson each making superb saves at penalty corners during this period.  We were able to reassert our control of the game and complete a very impressive victory.

All players contributed to the team’s success.  Josh Cavill had a relatively quiet time in goals but was alert when needed; Will Allen, Andrew Robertson and Nick Lacey provided great stability and anticipation in defence; Tom Dufty, Reagan Simons and Jack Green gave run and control, feeding the ball forward to team-mates; Captain Josh Nichols and Tom Verco controlled the middle of the field; and Liam McMaugh, Sami Zehir, Tom Bunge and Sam Rowe provided run and aggression up forward.  The boys played excellent hockey in very good spirits.  They were a delight to take away.

At Under 16 level, College Blue played the Barbarian team in an engaging game.  Nelson and Sutherland family pride was on the line and the 2-2 result meant that each family could travel home in harmony.  Whilst these games are not for competition points, they provide a good challenge for the boys with the men demonstrating the importance of control and team-play.  Blue played some excellent hockey and all boys seemed to enjoy the new challenges this game gave them.

College Gold had only nine players available due to holiday commitments and so their game against Monivae was played as a nine-a-side fixture.  The space this created worked in the boys’ favour and was a great confidence booster as they recorded a very impressive 11-1 victory.  Goal-scorers were Dylan Cunningham (4), Jock Adamson (3), Captain Lachie Holcombe, Reagan Simons, Oli Hoskyns and Zac Cunningham.  The efforts of all players were most impressive and the boys created some excellent forward moves.

We hope all the teams will return refreshed from their holiday break but still playing the fine hockey with which they have finished this term.

Tour De THAC

There has been an upsurge of cycling at the College this year, especially among the International Students. You may have heard about the famous cycling races of the world; the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España and the Tour Down Under but have you heard of the greatest the “Tour de THAC “(TDT)? The TDT is the College’s grand tour that pitches staff against students to see who can cover the greatest distance in half an hour. Due to the inclement weather this event will be held in the Tim Murray Room during one lunchtime in early August. This is a fundraising event for Mr Clare’s mentor group with half the money collected going to the Mulleraterong Centre and half to help local people in need through the Uniting Church. It is hoped that the students will sponsor the students riding with parents and staff sponsoring the staff who are riding. The staff will be represented by one of the oldest staff members (Mr Clare) and one of the youngest staff members (Mr Ough); student representatives will be chosen in the coming weeks. The tour will be under the supervision of the tour director, Dr Andrew Hirst, who will closely oversee the event. So please get behind this fund raising activity; sponsorship forms will be in upcoming newsletters.
