YEAR 11 VCAL CITY LIFE EXCURSION

On the 21st of April the Dromana College Year 11 VCAL students went on an excursion to City Life Frankston. We spent about three hours there helping the volunteers.  When we arrived we met Sue and Mark. Mark is the CEO of City Life and Sue helps to run the organisation.  Firstly, we all got an introduction into what they do and how they help homelessness in Frankston. We watched a presentation on homelessness and what it is and what they do within City Life.

After this we split into groups of about seven people and were allocated areas within the building to help assist the volunteers. Each group completed two tasks, helping make work easier for the volunteers. Our group’s first job was to clean the kitchen and dining area. Our second job was to help pack toys and goods that will be donated to children in need.

We learnt how much effort volunteers put into helping the homeless and the different situations that people fall into that can cause them to become homeless. We also discussed just how many people around Australia are actually homeless and how homeless people struggle with day-to-day living. Overall the day was very educational

and we learnt a lot about homelessness around the world. It was very inspiring to hear about the work that City Life do to help and support homeless people on the Mornington Peninsula.

At school we decided to do a food can drive, hoping to be able to donate many cans of food to City Life. We made this a competition between the year levels, and Year 8 won, with 369 cans being donated to this worthy cause. Overall 565 items were donated across the College and they will be delivered to City Life next week.
