Year 11 PE

On Friday 19th August, our Year 11 PE class participated in a session of wheelchair basketball thanks to Basketball Victoria.
Andrea, Ash and Shez led the class through the basic skills and rules of wheelchair basketball such as how to move around in the wheelchair and team building activities along with a game of wheelchair basketball to finish off the session.
This experience allowed us to develop an understanding of disabled sports and experience it firsthand as well as having a bit of fun along the way.
Within our PE class over the unit we have focused on enablers and barriers to participation in physical activity.
This session connected to our course content by providing an insight into ways people with disabilities overcome barriers they may face in sports.
We explored the many benefits of wheelchair basketball like the sense of community and connection it encourages and the joy it can bring participants.
Overall our class developed an appreciation for the complexity of wheelchair basketball through this enjoyable experience.

Congratulations Sophie Burrows!

A big congrats needs to go out to our resident superstar basketball, Sophie B of Yr 12. Sophie has been selected to join the Australian Under 18 team, and is travelling to India in September to compete in the Asian Cup.

Watch this space for updates, and we wish Sophie the best of luck!

Awesome effort - Max & Lex Robson-Garth!!

A huge well done and congratulations to Max (Yr 9) and his brother Lex (Yr 7).

Wishing you both all the very best at the Oceania Championships in February!!

Over the weekend of the 20th-21st of August my brother Lex and I competed at the Australian Nationals for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
We both worked really hard training 5 days a week since the State Championships back in May where I placed first first for a gold medal in my weight division 15 year male under 65kg and my brother second for silver in 13 year male under 60kg.

Since the state Championships I gained weight (muscle ;) ) which meant at the last moment I was to compete in the next weight division under 69kg.
Unfortunately, there was no one to fight in that division or the next under 73kg.
I was given an option of not competing and just moving to the next stage of competition which is Oceana in February.  However, I had been training so hard and wanted to compete so badly this weekend. So, the officials let me compete in the over 73kg which is under 90kg. Unfortunately, I didn’t win, but loved the experience fighting against players so much bigger than me.

My brother Lex on the other hand was in great form on competition day.
Relaxed, rested and in the right weight division, he won all  his fights leading up to the finals on Sunday and took home the silver in a very close finals match in the end.

We both qualified for Oceania Championships in February and look forward to the training leading up to it.

Lesson learnt:
Competition is all about the mental game.

Max (Yr 9)

Year 7 Boys Footy

On Friday 12th of August, the Year 7 boys AFL team played at the Victorian State Quarter Final in Ballarat.

Unfortunately we were able to get past St Joseph’s College Mildura, going down 15-55. Despite the loss, the boys played very hard, especially considering the cold, wet weather conditions.

A special thank you to the parents that drove down to show their support and also to our 3 Year 11 coaches, Amy M, Jacob J and Leo D.

Year 8 (Boys and Girls) Divisional Basketball

The Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls Divisional basketball was held at Coburg on Thursday 18th August.

The boys unfortunately lost to Greensborough College in the last game.

The girls won both their games against Macleod and Greensborough convincingly.

They will go through to the Northern Metro Regionals on the 18th of October in Term 4.

Mr Gazzola
