Term 3 Humanities Report

This term in Humanities Years 7-9 have been learning about economics, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Students have learned about how to budget and save for long and short-term savings goals, how to establish a business and take advantage of the changing situations around us.

Year 10 Business and Economics classes have been tracking the stock market to develop their understanding of investments and the Legal Studies classes have been learning about the rule of law and the effect of crime in society. In History, Year 10s have been investigating the rise of Hitler at the cause and effect of World War Two.

The VCE Legal Studies classes also had an opportunity to meet Julian Hill MP and ask him some questions about his journey into politics and what it means to be an elected representative. The Year 12 VCE Legal Studies class also had an exciting opportunity to visit Parliament House and the Old Melbourne Jail to have a first-hand experience of different areas of the legal system in Victoria.

Take care over the break and we look forward to delving into Geography in Humanities next term.

Julian Hill visits Lyndale!

A few weeks ago, the year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students had the pleasure of meeting MP Julian Hill, and the opportunity to speak to him and raise their concerns about the future of politics. It was incredible to see his enthusiastic nature, his eagerness to hear from young people and listen to their questions and hopes for the future, was admirable! Julian Hill’s bold answers to the questions signified his ability to openly express his opinions and challenge the traditional norms that are displayed in the parliament. In addition, I was amazed by the depth of knowledge and integrity that he holds towards his position as a MP and an advocate for free leadership that supports justice. Moreover, his diligent approach in his work, ensured confidence about the future of the Australian democracy as he confronts the toxic nature of parliament and advocates for a fairer and more equal practice. It was amazing to hear how from a young age Julian Hill was pro-women’s equality, being raised by a single mother, he viewed females as having equal authority as men. I was delighted to hear MP Julian Hill’s views and his ability to challenge the stereotypical beliefs of females being less than men. I was fascinated to hear his beliefs and values and appreciated his honesty, responsibility, resilience, and integrity towards his duties as an MP!

Julian Hill’s visit and discussion has been insightful in terms of his experience in the realm of politics and the workings behind it, and especially on his potentially controversial opinions on certain political figures in Parliament. Despite his unwillingness to publicise these criticisms, I found him to be charming, witty, and deeply intelligent. And although his political position requires him to act with an agenda (keeping in mind that we are an audience of youths largely unsure of politics), his sense of humor and too-honest honesty are qualities that I admire and, for the most part, trust. This boldness and willingness to express opinion without sway makes it clear to me why he is representative of us (or just Bruce, more specifically) and inspires me in a way that demonstrates just how much there is to learn before I reach someone like himself.

To have a federal politician come into school was a really inspiring experience especially seeing the sheer power figures like Julian Hill have to change Australian Lives for the better. It was really empowering hearing from the MP himself on his background and where he started his career journey, knowing that change makers don't have to be from a certain background was really reassuring, especially being at a public school in a lower socio-economic area. His answers were beyond what I expected, I really enjoyed hearing his views and opinions because of how simply he described more complex process in our government system, even as a non-legal studies student I had a lot to take away.

Year 12 Legal Studies Excursion

On the 2nd of September, the Year 12 Legal Studies Class was privileged enough to go out and experience the Old Melbourne Gaol and Victoria’s Parliament House. The day began with an early train trip to Melbourne Central Station where we grouped up and headed to the Gaol. We were welcomed by a Gaol Tourist, Erin, who talked to us about the history and significance of the Gaol. In the tour, we were showed the death masks of previous convicts from the 1800s and were introduced to the methods of punishment the Gaol used on their prisoners. Once the tour of the Gaol ended, we were brought to the old Magistrates’ Court we were conducted a mock trial on culpable driving. A really good experience to get to know the legal processes!

The second half of the day was met with sheer excitement as we headed off to Parliament House. We waited anxiously in line before going through a thorough security check our private tour of the most important law-making body in Victoria began. Mark, our tour guide for the day, welcomed us in the Gallery of Victorian Premiers, showing us the significance of their history. This was then followed by a seating within the Legislative Council and Assembly which was truly breathtaking due not only to its design, but the history and traditions that came along with it - from the touches of hand painted gold to the 10-metre-tall crystal chandeliers that hung above our heads. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
