Year 9
Mentone
"On the 22nd of July, Year 9 students walked across the road to Mentone Beach to participate in our 3km House Cross Country. As everybody approached the starting line, the anticipation and excitement grew as we had no prior experience of House Cross Country due to offsite learning in Years 7 and 8. The conditions could not have been any better for this special event. The race started on the sand for the first kilometre and helped stretch the year level apart with the more experienced runners getting a good lead ahead of the pack. As they got to the home stretch, the top 5 runners were fighting for the prestigious top 3 finish, however Hunter Lynch (9.8) from McCristal, the eventual winner of the race, was cruising with a handy lead. Hunter stayed strong in 1st position as they moved onto the final 100m with Joshua White (9.8) from Benilde not too far behind in 2nd. After Hunter and Joshua had made their way through to the end, Toby Anthonisz (9.4) also from Benilde, completed the 3km course and placed a very well-deserved 3rd position. Congratulations to all Year 9 competitors for their efforts!"
Joshua White (9.8)
"Recently exciting new opportunities awaited Year 9 students with their Year 10 (2023) subject selections. Our College offers a multitude of Year 10 electives anything from Business, Design Technologies, STEM, the Arts, Health and Physical Education to Humanities. The academically inclined also have the opportunity to apply for VCE Acceleration - starting a VCE subject in Year 10. With this many options, every student is able to find a subject that piques their interest and teaches them life-long skills."
Tomas Polintan (9.2)
"Year 9 Debating in 2022 has been a rollercoaster of triumph, loss and interruptions. Nonetheless, it has been an overall success with numerous victories won under the St. Bede’s banner. Over the span of five months, two Year 9 teams competed in the D grade DAV Debating competition against other schools. Team 1 consisted of John Carino (9.2), Harry McCawley (9.2) and Tomas Polintan (9.2); Team 2 included Ben Hall (9.5), Tommy James (9.3) and Jack Weavers (9.9). Overall, Team 1 tied in second place with 18 points out of a total of 20. Team 2 tied in fifth place with 12 points out of 20. Both teams tried extremely hard and put their best effort in.
Ultimately the Debating programme in Year 9 has been an amazing experience. This opportunity has significantly improved our public speaking, teamwork and organisational skills whilst also strengthening friendships along the way. Furthermore, some of the debaters will now be competing in the ACC Debating competition on the 17th of August."
Harrison McCawley (9.2)
"Over the past few months, ten Year 9 students volunteered to work with Kingston Council to review road safety around our school. Ms Tara Watson, the council’s Road Safety Educator, welcomed us in to their Active Youth Program. We have had the opportunity to visit the Kingston Centre in Cheltenham gaining a full day of workshop experience where we contributed our ideas and worked out a way to gain feedback from other year levels about road safety. Our group of ten have all worked together to make the surrounding roads a safer place for the College and local community. We have aimed to bring awareness around the consequences of breaking road laws and how to prevent accidents from occurring. We cannot wait to reveal all we have been working on during this time and eagerly await releasing the final product."
