History

Medieval Week

As part of the Year 8 History curriculum and their study of Medieval Europe, students were asked to create a visual display or model of an aspect of Medieval life which were then displayed in the library.

Students researched, designed and then produced a historically accurate model or artefact at home over the course of the unit. They are encouraged to be creative and think sustainably by using items they already had at home (recycled cereal boxes, egg cartons, toilet paper rolls or juice/ milk bottles etc.)

The Year 8 History teachers were excited to see their classrooms full of knight’s shields, stocks, medieval villages, castles and even some homemade peasant’s stew!

The students fully embraced the assignment and brought in some really incredible models which allowed them to show their creativity and experiment with different mediums which interested them!

Student Reflections

"Design a piece of medieval warfare or punishment to explain and show the difference of times and life. Having created shields, villages, jousting sticks and punishment devices has given the Year 8's a real taste of history and creativity. The work of blood, sweat and tears that were poured into the creations being displayed show that the medieval times were demonising and gruesome and were a fascinating period in history. Writing a brief explanation of people's creations I must say that all designs displayed are extremely impressive."
