Book Week
Each year at Mazenod, Children’s Book Week celebrations are an opportunity to highlight quality Australian authors who write specifically to an adolescent audience. We don’t dress up but we do share the focus of the week with all staff through a special morning tea and promote the work of these great writers.
On Wednesday, popular author George Ivanoff engaged and entertained the Year 7 cohort with stories of how he finds his inspiration and read to the group from his books. Hearing the story in the author’s own voice is a great experience. George also took the students on a journey about his research trips which took him to the far reaches of Australia. They also adventured through the Extreme Machine Expo in his You Choose book, Extreme Machine Challenge, where the cohort chose where the story goes.
George also conducted two writing workshops, where selected students learned how to plan both a linear narrative and a Choose Your Own Adventure style story. The students really enjoyed this enhancement to their reading program.
As George says, “Reading is not just an important life skill, it’s not just a gateway to learning, it’s not just a way into the thoughts and experience of other people, it’s not just an escape from everyday life, it’s not just entertainment — it’s not “just” anything. It is all of these things, and so much more.”
We look forward to the Literature Festival in Term 4 when the Library will once again make reading and literacy a whole school focus for enjoyment and growth.
