Science Report

On Thursday 10th of March, the VCE Physics 3 & 4 cohort went on an excursion to Luna Park to help us understand the topics we were learning in class. We started the day by going to St Kilda beach and watching the Roulettes, an aerobatic display team of the Air Force. It was remarkable to see the speed and tricks that the pilot demonstrated. After the plane flew off in the distance, we entered Luna Park.

The first ride was the dodgem cars which allowed us to ram the cars into friends but also showed us how impulse occurs and how momentum is transferred in each collision. After this, most of us split into our own groups. As such, we went to the Top Drop. The ride would take us upwards and then drop us, thus allowing us to feel how gravity made us accelerate towards the ground. Then we went to the Pharaoh’s Curse. The ride took us in a circular motion vertically while momentarily stopping at the top to heighten the fear factor. However, this did not stop us from screaming as loud as we could. Another ride was Enterprise. The numerous rides definitely made us dizzy, but did not stop us from calculating the centripetal acceleration.

As the day came to an end, we headed back to school after enjoying lunch at Luna Park. The trip really allowed us to understand how physics affects us in our daily lives and how different forces act on a body of mass. This helped us a lot in answering questions in class as we could now relate it to what we experienced.
