Year 4 Term Overview

Nǐ hǎo (hello) Parents/Carers,

Womenjeka (Welcome) to Term 3! Term 3 has started off very familiar to last year. Hopefully this lockdown is only brief.

Week 1, saw us settling back into the classroom after everyone’s much deserved mid-year break.

This term we will continue our specialist focus areas are - PE, Visual Art, Performing Art, Mandarin, Science and Kitchen Garden.

During Literacy this term, we will be immersing ourselves in Poetry and Exposition Writing.  Within the Reading lessons, we will develop our understanding within these writing styles through the language features, identifying the purpose, comprehension, discovering new vocabulary and how the author keeps us interested in the text.

Writing, we will continue developing knowledge around 6 + 1 Traits of Writing with a particular focus on Sentence Fluency, Ideas, Voice, Presentation and Conventions. Students will discover the text structure to help support the creation of their own poetry and exposition piece through the plan, draft, edit, revise and publish stages.

During Mathematics, we will be learning about Place Value (whole and decimal), Additive Thinking, Financial Maths, Common Fractions and Decimals, Multiplicative Thinking and Time. All areas of Mathematics will have a focus of problem solving where students will use a range of problem-solving strategies. Multiplicative Thinking is a focus that we will be showing and developing the students range of strategies that support the fluency with multiplication facts.

Inquiry is a fantastic time for all as students become critical thinkers. During this term, students will be focusing on Our Land, Our Stories – Traditions, and Geography – Sharing the Planet. During Our Land Our Stories, students are discovering traditions within their own family and traditions of First Nation Peoples.

Throughout Geography, we will be investigating our driving question, ‘Why are the characteristics important to the land across the Southern Hemisphere and how are they connected?’

Homework and Take-Home Readers has now commenced for Term 3 for all Year 4 students. Both Homework book and the Green Reading Diary is to be handed in for checking every Friday.

Xièxiè (Thank you) from the Grade 4 Teachers,
