Get your holiday Reading today!

We are thrilled with an increase in library borrowing for enjoyment and urge our students to come in and borrow a book this week.

Over Term 2 2021, we have increased the focus on reading for enjoyment.  We have had many classes from Year 7 through to Year 10 enjoy our updated reading space.  It is wonderful to see the increase in book borrowing from the students and also a growing interest in reading e-books via our SORA app.

Reading for Enjoyment and the Premier’s Reading Challenge

Our Library catalogue Reading Lists provide a subject or genre specific strategy to select a book by type or reading ability.  One such list, the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) 2021 reading list is accessible from our McCarthy Library homepage.  It provides a comprehensive guide to PRC book selection across the fiction genres and by reading capability. And remember, try something new.  Read widely because you may suddenly discover you have a taste for a book type you had not previously considered.

The SORA e-book reading app can be accessed from the Chromebook via the McCarthy Library Homepage.  To get started, refer to our step-by-step, in-house video guide on the McCarthy Library homepage by clicking on the SORA icon.  Alternatively, come in visit us in the library for assistance.

Library Research access for students

We are fortunate at McCarthy to have a library and a virtual library.  Students have access to a wealth of professionally curated online resources as well as resources in the library. World Book encyclopedia is one of our many online resources. Through World Book we have access to more than 40,000 encyclopedia articles, learning resources and research tools. Following is a reminder of how students access World Book.

How do to access World Book from our Library homepage

From the McCarthy Learning homepage, ‘Students’ tab drop-down menu, select ‘Library (Oliver)’. This will open the Library homepage. From here click on “World Book Log in”. You will automatically log in through our McCarthy Library subscription.  You do not require a personal log in.

The value of World Book encyclopedia is that it provides an excellent overview on a topic.  Reading an encyclopedia article first, assists students in assessing the reliability of other online information they may find during their online research.  Through World Book you will find text, media, research guides, a dictionary, website recommendations and geographic content. You can use the ‘How to cite this article,’ Citation Builder to cite your research in MLA, APA and in the Harvard style.

World Book online translates the articles in over 100 different languages and there is also access to journal articles for senior assessment tasks.  If you need guidance to get started, please come and see the Library staff.

From the Library staff, we wish all our families are wonderful break.  We look forward to seeing everyone next term.
