New Procedures - Signing up for Sport
If you wish to sign up for any sport run by MCC, please follow this procedure:
- Go to the back of the staffroom where the photocopiers are. On the window will be a list of sports available
- Next to this will be another sheet with spaces where you can put your name down. Write your name here.
- If there are more students signed up than positions, available then trials will be needed.
- After teams are finalised students will receive an invitation to the sporting event via Compass.
NSW Netball Schools Cup 2021
On Tuesday 25 May the local Tamworth Secondary Schools NSW Netball Cup was held at the Tamworth netball courts. McCarthy Catholic College was well represented with 10 teams participating on the day. This included 4 Year 7 and 8 girls' teams, 3 Year 9 and 10 girls' teams, one Year 7 and 8 boys' team and 2 Year 9 and 10 teams. Other schools participating on the day included Manilla Central School, Barraba Central School, and Tamworth High School.
Great netball was played on the day with all students playing keenly, showing great sportsmanship and representing the College with pride.
The Year 7 and 8 girls' Red team as well as the Year 9 and 10 girls' Red team played outstandingly winning all their matches. These teams included several girls who have played representative netball and they displayed great skill and teamwork. All the girls teams were very competitive, enjoying a great day of netball.
Many of the boys were playing their first game of netball. There was a big improvement in skills and game play as the boys grasped the key rules and concepts of the game. Due to numbers they were playing in the non-competitive division. All the boys' teams and the two girls' teams will progress to the North-West Regional Finals to be held in Tamworth on Wednesday 28 July. A big thank you to Netball NSW for organising and running the event. Also thankyou to the dedicated parents who helped out and supported the teams. A big thank you to the students who helped out umpiring, as well as Mrs Natahlia Bryant and Mrs Nicole Anderson for their umpiring and coaching. Thank you to Miss Paige Berthold and Mrs Samantha Cox who assisted the teams on the day.
Open Boys Rugby League
On Tuesday 1 June the Open boys' Rugby League team played in the Country Cup competition in Tamworth. Tamworth and Peel High Schools were the other schools involved in the competition. The first match was against Tamworth High School and in a tightly contested game the boys went down 22-12. The boys only had a short break before lining up against Peel High School. This proved to be a nail biting encounter with McCarthy winning 14-10 in a thrilling game of Rugby League. There were a host of strong performers. Sebastian Lawler scored 2 tries. Adam Refalo was heavily involved and had some great runs up the middle; Tyler Swift used his skills and speed in an impressive display. The Year 12 boys were excited to play and enjoyed the opportunity to have a game. Clint Aitken was outstanding as was Nathan Summers, Noah Dunnill and Nathaniel Thrift out wide. Julian Fuller played well until he sustained an unfortunate injury.
A big thank you to Luke Taylor, Ryan Schmiedel and the NRL development team for organising the event and to Mr Damian Kenniff for training and coaching the boys. Well done to all the boys on their efforts and the outstanding manner in which they represented the college.
Girls Rugby League
On Monday 31 May our girls played in the North West Rugby League Katrina Fanning Cup. Two teams from McCarthy Catholic College played on the day the under 14 and 16 teams. Teams from all over the region participated on the day including Oxley, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Warialda, Coonabaraban, Bingara High Schools, and Manilla Central School. The girls now have an opportunity to play Rugby league at the NSW CCC Under 16 level in 2021 and this competition was an important progression towards this pathway.
The girls had varying experience from playing in the football codes and had an opportunity to put into place the skills they learned last year from the clinics they took part in late last year. Both teams played 3 games and won one each. Each game was close and played in a competitive and fair spirit, with improvement evident with each game. Isabelle Murray and Piper Kirby played very well and displayed tackling techniques many players would love to have. Tomi Gavin and Jess Martin were also standout players. The girls had a great day and represented the college proudly. Thank you to the NRL for hosting the day and to Mrs Tanya Laird and Mr Shaun Nichols for coaching the teams.
Bill Turner Cup - Round 3
On Tuesday 1 June the Under 15 boys' Bill Turner soccer team played against Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School at their home ground. Spectators were treated to a great game of football with McCarthy finishing 5-3. The skills on display were outstanding with nice passing and team play on display. Farrer were always in the game creating chances, but great defence and effort by our boys sealed the win. Thank you to Mr Ronny Rindo for coaching the boys and thank you to Edward Williams, Bradyn Boonstra and Jack Smith for refereeing and their work as linesmen. Our next opponent is Inverell High School later in the term away from home and the boys are looking forward to the contest. Well done boys, good luck!

Bill Turner Cup - Round 4
On Friday 18 June the Under 15 Bill Turner Soccer boys travelled to Inverell Sports Complex to play their round 4 game against Holy Trinity College of Inverell. The boys had been training hard and were ready for a tough match, and had the bestof the early exchanges. Goals to Zach Eagleston, Brady Hunter, Sam Morris and Liam Gordon. In the end the boys scored an impressive 4-0 victory. Holy Trinity was a worthy opponent, creating several opportunities with good play and passing. However, great saves by our goalkeeper Jack Klasen kept the opposition scoreless. The boys ran hard in defence and nice touches from Achille Monet and Liam Gordon’s blinding speed kept the pressure on Holy Trinity. The win was a great team effort and the boys now have the honour of being named New England winners and they move on to the next stage of the competition which will be a great challenge against the top school from the Hunter region. A big thank you to Mr Ronny Rindo for his great coaching efforts and to Mr Brad Welsh for driving the bus and supporting the boys.

NSW All Schools Swimming
On Friday 28 May Tilani Smith represented NSW Combined Catholic Colleges at the NSW All Schools Swimming Championships in Sydney. Tilani competed in the 12-14 years 200 metre breaststroke and finished in 6th position. She was actually the fastest 13 year old in this event. She also finished 6th in the 13 years 50 metre breaststroke and 8th in the 12-14 years 100 metre Breastroke. This was a fantastic effort competing at such a high level; achieving these great results is a credit to Tilani's hard work and dedication. She has a wonderful technique and we wish her all the best for the rest of the swimming season.
Diocesan Football
On Friday 4 June the Diocesan Football trials were held in Armidale. Competing on the day were the 4 other schools across the Armidale Diocese: St Mary's Gunnedah, O’Connor Catholic College of Armidale, Holy Trinity Inverell, and St Philomena’s Moree in 4 divisions. Junior boys and girls and Senior boys and girls. All students participated with enthusiasm and played with focus on sportsmanship and fair play. The Boys Opens' team were undefeated on the day, winning their division, in a very impressive effort. They were well led by Kilian Apen who was the best player on the ground, Bradyn Boonstra scored two goals and was assisted competently William Berton, Eddie Williams and Jack Smith. All the boys contributed to the success of the team and visibly enjoyed sharing the experience.
The Junior boys' team were very competitive playing three close games. While they did not secure a win, they had plenty of good shots at goal, with a few narrowly missing. Achille Monet, Blake Patterson and Liam Gordon had some crisp touches and led the team well. In what was a great experience for the boys, junior players really shone and were not intimidated by the size difference.
The girls' teams combined and played great football together. It was an excellent effort from the girls who had a combination of experienced players, all round athletes and enthusiastic competitors. The girls were very competitive, gaining a draw and a couple of narrow losses. Tarnee Ingram, Daisy George, Erin Allan and Olivia Whittemore led with enthusiastic performances.

NSW CCC Cross Country
On Tuesday 8 June four students from McCarthy Catholic College represented the Armidale Diocese at NSW CCC Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek in Sydney. Lauren Barnes, Isabella Wall, Taylah Mace and Lily Heap. Lauren Barnes finished 20th and Isabella Wall finished 9th. Isabella has qualified for the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships on Friday 16 July in Sydney. Well done to all the girls who had a great run and made the College proud. A big thank you to the parents for taking the students down and supporting them on the day.
Under 15 Country Cup Rugby League
On Wednesday 9th June our Under 15 Rugby League team participated in the Country Cup Rugby League competition held at the grounds of Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School. The boys along braved the wet and cold conditions but nonetheless enjoyed a great day of footy. Participating schools in the 15’s division included Tamworth, Peel and Oxley High School. The boys played 3 games with all matches being very competitive and close affairs. The boys won 1 game and narrowly lost 2. The matches were played in good spirit and the boys showed great defence and attacking plays. Up front Lewis Ebzery and Callan Cotton were outstanding, making strong runs. Sam Butcher had a great all round game and was dangerous every time he touched the ball. Out wide Adam Davis played brilliantly showing great speed and agility. All the boys stepped up and played well. A big thank you to Mr Bernie Williams and Mr Damian Kenniff for coaching the teams and to the NRL for running the event. The team included:

NSW CCC Open’s Basketball 2021
On Tuesday and Wednesday the 15 and 16 June the Open Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams participated in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Championships in Penrith. Both the Boys' and Girls' teams had been training for several weeks and were keen to start the Championships strongly. The boys were drawn in Pool C where they played against St Francis Xavier College Hamilton, Edmund Rice College Wollongong, Marist College Kogarah, and De La Salle College Cronulla, The boys lost the first game, won the second game and followed with 2 close losses. The standard of competition was very high but the boys did were competitive in all games. There was plenty of spirit and effort shown by all the boys especially Chris Pearson, Jake Larkham and Nicholas O’Connor who made great shots. The team was also well served by Nathaniel Thrift whose speed across the court resulted in crucial turnovers and rebounds. A few close misses at the basket was the difference in many games.
The girls played in pool B with matches being played against St John Paul College Coffs Harbour, Gilroy Catholic College Castle Hill and St Francis De Sales College Leeton.
The girls started well with a good win in the first game followed by a narrow 1 point loss in the second game. The girls won the 3rd game and qualified for the semi-finals against St Mary Star of the Sea College Wollongong. The Wollongong team was very strong and contained a number of representative players. The girls never stopped trying and finished 3rd overall; an outstanding team effort. Sami McCubbin and Olivia Whittemore were outstanding, showing talent in both attack and defence. The performance of the girls was particularly impressive considering a number of the girls were playing up an age and are still eligible for the junior championship in Term 4. Gabrielle Higgins (Year 9), Erin Hansen, Aleisha Young, and Mia Darcy (Year 10) more than matched their older opponents. All students represented the College proudly and their conduct was exemplary.
A big thank you to the coaches Niel Wood, Trent Balderstone and Miss Amy Gambrill and to Mr Wayne Northey and Mrs Sam Cox for travelling withand looking after the team throughout the trip. Our dedicated staff and volunteers gave up their public holiday and spent time away from their families to support our students. Thank you to the many parents who provided the team with support throughout the competition. To our year 12 students Olivia Whittemore, Daisy George, Jake Larkham, Nathan Summers, Nathaniel Thrift, Julian Fuller ,Noah Dunnill and Nicholas O’Connor thank you for your contribution to McCarthy Basketball since year 7, you have always represented the College with distinction.
