Student Excellence Program Ancient China

Years 7 and 8

Ancient China High Ability Student Workshop

Students who have demonstrated high ability in the area of History in Years 7 and 8 were nominated to attend this workshop delivered by the National Gallery of Victoria.

Students used primary sources to explore life and death in Ancient China and the roles and achievements of significant individuals of the time. Primary sources were used to investigate the beliefs, values and practices of people in Ancient China.

Students were given the opportunity to examine the different methods and sources used by historians and archaeologists to explore historical concepts and to discuss the importance of preserving the remains and heritage of the past.

These are some comments from students who participated in the program. They are to be commended for their involvement and commitment as the the day was a home study day for students.

I would like to say it was a very interesting session to learn about different types of statues. It was fun learning about different people and their roles they had in Ancient times. I really enjoyed learning about objects from past decades.

I really enjoyed participating in the ancient China research task as it has extended my knowledge on their traditions, artifacts and daily life. I would really recommend participating in this task if you are eager to learn about an amazing ancient civilisation.

I found the workshop really informative, from how well the speakers knew what they were talking about to all of the little facts that they threw into the presentation made it worth going. I found it really intriguing to find out about Ancient China and how people from our century are putting their own spin of ancient artifacts.

I would just like to say how thankful I am to be able to go to these kinds of presentations and learn more in-depth with people who work with these kinds of things every day.

Learning about Ancient Chinese history was very interesting. It was cool how we got to see pictures of the artifacts and did activities about them like guessing what they were used for and what they were made from. I liked how we got to interact with other school across Australia via the chat it was nice to see if they were thinking the same thing as you or if it was different!
