STATE REP KAI GERBER (YEAR 10) CLIMBS TO SUCCESS

Congratulations to Kai Gerber (Year 10 Trinity) who just returned from Sydney, NSW after representing WA at the National Youth Climbing Championships consisting of the top 8 competitors from each state in Australia and from New Zealand. Kai is one of our very first Climbing state representatives in Sacred Heart history! He competed in the Youth A category and placed 14th in all of his climbs (Lead, Boulder and Speed).

Kai is now placed 5th overall in Australia!

We interviewed Kai to learn more about his passion for climbing:

"On the topic of favourite type, that is a very hard question for me. Each event brings in and focuses on a new and different aspect of Climbing, although if I were to pick one it would have to be Boulder. I love the simplicity of the climb, with only a few moves all at the top end of your difficulty, and I think having only four minutes to figure out how to climb it is much more interesting than only having one attempt, such as in Lead. Speed is less interesting for me as it takes out a lot of the mental element of climbing as you already know the climb and have familiarised yourself with the movements.

I first got into climbing about four and a half years ago purely because I needed a sport after I quit Hockey. I kind of did it for two years without caring about it very much until I met someone who had gone to places such as Patagonia and Squamish through climbing. When I realised that I could use climbing as a way of getting me to these obscure and beautiful places, I decided to really give it a go and I fell in love with the community, the movement, and the personal challenge."

Wow - congratulations Kai!
