School Athletics Carnival 2022

With participation levels at an all-time high and house colours out in force, the St Mary’s community enjoyed a great day of fierce but friendly competition at this year’s Athletics Carnival, on Friday the 24th of June.

All students demonstrated their enthusiasm and house spirit, competing in a variety of events including the 100m sprint, shot put, discuss, long jump and high jump, all while cheering for their classmates.

Not only were we lucky enough to see the sun shining but we were also able to indulge in the likes of Bean Travelin coffee who provided us with an array of delicious hot drinks on the day, thank you so much to Gemma & Chris!

It was also a warm welcome to see parents, grandparents and carers at school, thank you to all that helped out to make the day a great success for our students. We would also like to say a big thanks to Mrs Cox for organising this event & to the P&F who provided lunch for all.

The following students were outstanding in their field on the day and were awarded Champion and Runner Up, congratulations!

Armidale Diocesan Toni Palmer Memorial Shield Rugby League  - Wednesday 29th June 2022

St Mary's 1st XIII Rugby League Team travelled to Inverell to contest the newly named Toni Palmer Shield, featuring teams across the Armidale Diocese yesterday. The first game against a mixed side from Moree, Wee Waa, Armidale and Uralla saw a settling period with the match see-sawing from end to end.  In the end, the stoic Guyra team couldn't hold on, despite tackling machines Jack Beard, co-captain Tom Graham and Darcy Sisson, working themselves to a standstill.

A short break and kicking off against neighbouring Glen Innes team saw some terrific sniping runs from Hugo Sisson punching well above his weight. Despite desperate defence from pocket dynamo Flynn Macfarlane and second-rower Archie Foster, the eventual carnival winners were too big and well-drilled.

The next game against the home team, Inverell, was a close contest with some defensive lapses costing the side in the end. Edward Grills directed forward traffic and ran well, and Zac Jones made inroads in defence of their more fancied opponents. The last few minutes saw the Inverell side gasping for air and Guyra finished the game with a wet sail as combinations started to gel through the team.

A break for lunch and Guyra went into their next clash with Narrabri, a genuine chance of an upset. An arm wrestle ensued, and Narrabri's state representative broke the line in a solo effort to score. Younger players found their confidence with Connor Montague carrying strongly, and lionheart winger Peter Grills took the opposition forwards on up the middle. Christopher Welsh showed up against his old school to top the tackle count and Jack Wesley pulled off some great runs and tackles. A much better kicking game from Jack Beard put St Mary's in with a show but couldn't reel the visitors in before the full-time whistle.

The final game against St Xaviers Gunnedah was always destined to be a close affair, with Guyra keen to leave its mark on the carnival. Hugo Sisson took off out of dummy half like a scalded cat, only to be cut short within an inch of the try line, as was Edward Grills very unlucky not to score near the posts. A defensive lapse led to a try in the corner to Gunnedah, but Guyra responded to end one try apiece as Flynn Macfarlane snuck through a mouse hole in the Gunnedah defence and crossed stripe out wide from great ball control by the whole team over the length of the field. Myles Cox, Sam Reeves and Baxter Clark had their day's best games and were in everything.

Overall, a spirited performance from a much younger and smaller St Mary's team. Every game was competitive, and the players could hold their heads high as the only small school to enter the Toni Palmer Shield.

Sports Report by Jon Welsh (St Mary's Rugby League Team Coach)

We would like to congratulate the boys in the school's footy team for their hard work at training and giving their all in the comp in Inverell yesterday. A very big thank you to the teams coaches Jon Welsh and Riley Carroll for bringing the team together and getting them match-ready. Your help and dedication is greatly appreciated and the boys have loved every minute of their training with you both.
