Year 12 Formal
The stage was set at the Vogue ballroom for the class of 2022’s formal, aptly named for the night ahead. Limousines glided into the venue, a unique party going on inside each. Dashing individuals departed their vehicles, faces alight with excitement for the long-awaited night. A fabulous night where the class of 2022 could momentarily sideline the stresses and worries of YR 12. We funnelled into the venue, eagerly waiting to be let into the ballroom and our tables. A photo booth was brought to our attention, an opportunity to cement the night in physical form.
Our very own Steven A.K.A Big Shmack lit up the stage with a surprise feature from Prabash. A delicious alternating three-course meal was unveiled throughout the night, peaking with a sticky date pudding. Photographers weaved around the ballroom, trying to capture everyone looking their absolute best and judging from the photographs, they did a remarkable job. Of course, who could forget the fixed photographer upstairs who treated us all like models, asking for different poses and choreographing fabulous shoots. Thanks to the DJ for being so attuned to the crowd and keeping us on our feet all night long by blasting classics and modern tunes. A snapshot of the venue at its most explosive would have displayed the class of 2022 all packed on the floor, belting out the lyrics to a world-renowned song, softly illuminated by the intricate chandeliers overhead.
A special thank you to Ms. Soltys and the formal committee for all their hard work in planning and ensuring that it would be a memorable night for everyone attending. The teachers who attended most definitely require an acknowledgement for putting up with us at our most rowdy points with nothing but a smile; we appreciate you. Last but not least, shoutout to the class of 2022 for showing up, full of excitement for each of you contributed in your own way to make the night the spectacular event that it was.

Food Studies Excursion to Deakin University
As one of our first excursions after two painful years of being in lockdown, with strict restrictions preventing many excursions from proceeding, it was a fantastic opportunity to be able to participate in an external learning environment for our Food Studies unit at Deakin University.
At the university, we worked through a series of small tasks in pairs along the course of a workshop, guided by several experienced Deakin University PhD research students, to gain a deeper understanding of a few key topics involved in our courses. From learning about the concept and impact of food miles on our carbon footprints to creating smoothies with unique selected ingredients from around the globe, the excursion provided us with valuable knowledge applicable to our class learning, teaching us about sustainability, food waste and various factors food production and consumption, giving us insight into ways to be more health conscious and improve our eating habits. It was interesting to see how selection of ingredients to make a simple smoothie can have an effect on the environment.
The excursion also involved learning about food labelling requirements in Australia and how to identify a health claim as well as a nutrient content claim. We also learnt about objective qualitative measurements used in food industry to grade food.
We experienced using equipment like refractometer, Brix meter and colorimeter. The two classes had an amazing time at the University who did a fantastic job of creating an environment where the information was packaged into a format which was engaging, through a well-designed combination of both information and live demonstrations. We even got a chance to try Astronaut ice cream sandwiches (freeze dried ice cream)!!
On behalf of the class, a large thank you to Miss Bhola for organising the excursion and for Deakin University for facilitating the event.

Campus Traffic Safety Committee Update
July 2022
Campus Traffic Safety Committee have recently contacted the school with concerns they have about vehicles travelling to and from Nossal, through the university campus at excessive speeds.
Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard is a road that has a varying speed limit between 10 and 20kph depending on whether the area is a shared pedestrian zone or not. The road is sign posted and also has speed humps to slow the traffic, however clearly these are not acting as a deterrent to some drivers.
It is important that all drivers of vehicles moving along the road, observe the speed limits. The limits have been instigated to ensure the safety of all pedestrians, including our students. Currently there is concern about some vehicles being driven far too fast which clearly has the potential to cause accidents.
All drivers are urged to be patient and observe the road rules relevant to this area. It is a policy requirement of the Department of Education and a major safety concern for Campus Traffic Safety Committee who have advised that should the problem persist, police will be asked to attend during peak times.
Slow down! It may be your child's friend that is hit and injured by a car travelling too fast.

An interest in Physics?
Nossal High School has an active physics program which incorporates a significant amount of design methodology. There is an opportunity for a community member to do some volunteering with us to support the work of our physics teachers. The work would suit someone with an interest in physics or engineering, and would involve spending one day a week working with physics teachers to develop and prepare materials for various experiments and activities to be carried out as part of the teaching program.
If you are interested in volunteering with us in this capacity, please contact Stuart Fankhauser (stuart.fankhauser@nossalhs.vic.edu.au).
