da Vinci Decathlon
On Tuesday of this week we had a team of seven Year 7 students who participated in the 2022 da Vinci Decathlon. This involves solving challenges across ten categories such as English, Science, Mathematics, General Knowledge, Art & Poetry … and on Wednesday it was the turn of the Year 9s. It is an all-day competition, and very intensive as they work collaboratively to come up with accurate and creative solutions. Well done to all of our participants. While there were no prizes (although the Year 7s did receive a 5th place for the Ideation category) it was generally agreed that it was a good learning experience, and a realisation that more practice next time will be a big advantage.
The Big Science Competition
The Big Science Competition is a 50-minute, multiple choice competition testing science knowledge, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable … and interesting! We had three entrants, all achieving outstanding results:
Debating
Round 2 took place last week, with mixed results. Special mention to our teams who have won both of their debates so far:
Junior A Team 2 – Jessica Nguyen, Isabelle Ryan and Grace Collins
Intermediate B Team 1 – Iris Hamilton, Amelia Saunders, Lucy Dachs and Ruby Richards
Our final round for Term Two will be in Week 8 for our Year 5 – 10 teams, and Week 9 for our Year 11 team.
Mock Trial
After having their Trial postponed it finally took place on Tuesday evening of last week. Unfortunately the team were not able to successfully defend their client in a criminal case of graffiti. Well done to all the team and their supporting staff; the girls have learnt a great deal about the Australian legal system through this program.
Rostrum Public Speaking
Congratulations to Alexandra Seal (Year 10) who has progressed to the State Final, which will be held at Parliament House on Saturday 25 May. A great effort, considering that this section is also open to Year 11 and Year 12 students. In addition to her prepared topic, ‘War is not the answer’, Alexandra will have 15 minutes to prepare a 3-minute short notice speech.
Tournament of Minds
Nominations are now being received for this problem-solving challenge which will take place over six weeks in Term Three. Students will work in a team of seven to provide a creative solution to a challenge in the areas of Language Literature, Social Sciences, STEM or the Arts. Tournament Day, when the students present their solutions, will be Sunday 11 September at Flinders University. This is open to students from Year 5 to Year 10, and all will be given an opportunity to learn more about the program early next week.
