This week in the Junior School I spent a delightful afternoon listening to Ms Ziesing read Pippi Longstocking to the girls in Year 3, while we all enjoyed gingernut biscuits and cups of tea! Many rhyming verses and lyrical stanzas were also enjoyed at the IPSHA Poetry Competition held on Wednesday 8 June; we congratulate Matilda (Year 4), Erin (Year 5), Camille (Year 6) for their fabulous recitals. We also celebrated the beautiful artwork produced by our junior primary students in our R-2 Art Club, their exhibition included self-portraits, colourful rainbows and flower designs. When I popped into Year 6, Alice shared her monologue about the life of Julia Gillard and in Year 5 Ella explained how the land was cared for by our First Nations peoples – their writing was detailed, expressive and reflected the breadth of understanding they have developed about each area of research. Also, on Wednesday we welcomed our new mid-year Reception girls; they had a wonderful transition visit and are looking forward to joining us again next week… where we will enjoy another fabulous time learning and having fun together!

The Migration Museum is our main inquiry focus this term for Year 6. The girls have completed intrepid research, compiling notes on an influential female Australian migrant. They now work on constructing a monologue which will be rehearsed and memorised over the coming weeks. The girls have been intrigued by the stories of these inspirational individuals, many of whom have triumphed over adversity to pave a new and prosperous life in Australia. One of the key features of History in the curriculum for Year 6 is the notable achievements of significant individuals; these inspirational people have all contributed to the fabric of Australian society and will be celebrated at the Year 6 Showcase held at the end of the term.
Like all inquiry topics, learning is integrated across many subject areas. Our class novel ties in closely with the theme of migration, in particular the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. “Mahtab’s Story” by Libby Gleeson is inspired by a true story and chronicles the arduous journey Mahtab and her family undergo when they make the harrowing decision to leave their homeland of Afghanistan and migrate to Australia. It is essential for us as active and informed citizens that we make ourselves aware of stories like Mahtab; in exploring and discussing these difficult topics, we get a greater understanding of the world around us and in doing so, develop a deeper sense of empathy.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday which occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar, which corresponds to late May or June in the Gregorian calendar. The students celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival on the 3rd June. They have fun making zongzi, learning about the Dragon Boat Festival and its history, lining up to paddle the boat to the drummer’s beat and making Dragon Boat models.

On Thursday, the Reception-Year 2 Art Club girls enjoyed their final session together for this semester. The girls have learnt so many different skills, been exposed to various artists, explored a range of mediums and have been able to set their creativity free! They have all created individual pieces across a wide range of genres.
We concluded our last session with an invitation for families to join us in celebrating their daughter’s art journey. It was wonderful to welcome so many families to the College and the girls felt incredibly proud to showcase their amazing work. We look forward to welcoming more girls to Art Club in Semester Two.
