This week Year 10 Engineering and Space Science classes participated in an engaging program at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) at The University of Adelaide. The morning was delivered by a group of female students studying Physics at the University, including Loreto Old Scholar Sammi Summerford (’19).
Alongside the excitement of being able to travel by bus for an excursion once more, the visit to OzGrav inspired students to look at science a little differently. The Year 10s used Virtual Reality Headsets as part of Mission Gravity, an experience to explore stellar evolution through understanding the temperature, colour and composition of stars. They were also introduced to AMIGO - Adelaide’s Mini-Interferometer for Gravitational-wave Outreach. A tabletop interferometer that was used to demonstrate the operating principle of the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) detectors. Both activities complementing their studies in science this semester and highlighting the many opportunities available for future study.

Congratulations to Jade Ramfos who has been selected to represent SA in the 2022 WAG Border Challenge in Queensland in June. We look forward to seeing how Jade competes! Well done on this fantastic achievement.
The Year 10 Health Science class experienced a very enjoyable and uplifting Pilates session instructed by our very own Marketing and Digital Communications Manager, Brittany Warren. Pilates is not just designed to strengthen the muscles and improve balance but can help to reduce stress and anxiety, enhance concentration and even improve sleep habits. It was the ideal opportunity for the girls to ‘recharge their batteries’, relax and renew their optimism and resilience for the weeks to follow.

The Year 10s are currently working on DNA and genes in their Biology Unit. Last week, the girls worked on an experiment where they extracted DNA from Kiwi fruit.
Last Wednesday a selected group of Year 9 students were given the opportunity to attend the Young Women in Stem event. The students learnt from technologists, engineers and mathematicians through a range of hands-on tasks which expanded their knowledge of careers in STEM.
The students created new fragrances, learnt about the use of robots in areas of mining and of opportunities where they can apply their love of mathematics through data analysis.
It was wonderful to see and speak to Women in careers in fields that spark so much curiosity for our own students.
We have many great opportunities for Parents and Caregivers to become involved in our College Community. We are currently seeking nominations for the following roles:
Year Level Representatives ELC-12
The Year level/Class representatives act as the primary liaison between Class and year level Parents and the P&F Committee. These roles play a crucial part in maintaining and developing our Community spirit as they:
Parents & Friends Committee
The Parents and Friends of Loreto is a Parent group whose purpose is to promote and encourage Community Spirit within the College.
Parents and Friends Volunteer Pool
The Volunteer Pool works closely with the P&F Committee to assist with the various events and fundraising activities conducted throughout the year. This provides an opportunity for Parents and Carers to contribute as their schedule or time permits.
