Junior School

Year Prep/One Term Three Overview 2020

Religious Education

As people of faith and Religious Education learners, the students will investigate the Whole School Scripture, Matthew 25: 31 – 40, The Final Judgement. The Children will have the chance to connect with the symbols in scripture and dialogue about their personal connections with the scripture. 

 

Wellbeing 

Students will take part in a series of guided lessons promoting respect and equality. The children will be provided with modelled focus groups to support the development of building healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. They will continue to follow the Berry St Education Model  including regular brain breaks and daily check- ins whilst working remotely or onsite. 

 

Inquiry 

In our unit “Fairness and Friendship” students will find out about social justice through the lens of fairness and friendship. The students will learn techniques to manage conflict and social skills to use when working in a team.

 

Literacy

Reading:  Students will investigate a variety of picture storybooks with the theme of social justice. Students will foster an enjoyment and understanding of literature and the concepts of print. They will participate in guided reading lessons and learn skills that will build on their reading strategies.

 

Writing:  Students will continue to learn about how to write using Victorian Cursive. The children will respond to familiar texts and unfamiliar texts. Students will continue to practise using a variety of punctuation and explore some editing skills. Students will be investigating a word of the week, sentence of the week or a weekly spelling digraph and spelling list following the pattern.

 

Speaking and Listening: Students will learn to speak in front of different audiences and respond to direct and indirect question on Google Meets. Students will develop their speaking and listening skills by listening and responding to spoken instructions, discuss opinions about characters and events.

 

Numeracy

Students will continue to build their strategies for counting, place value and ordering numbers. They will practise the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The children will be provided the opportunity to continue to build understanding of 2-dimensional shapes and 3-dimensional objects.

Students will investigate formal and informal units of measurement.

 

Digital Technology

Students will use the SeeSaw app to showcase their learning. They will learn about and become familiar with Google classroom on the laptops. 

 

Art

This term Grade Prep/1 students will use the whole school art theme of ‘Time’ to understand representations of time in art works through the exploration of seasons, life cycles, and creation.  Students will explore the life and art of famous artists Van Gogh and Claude Monet, as well as indigenous contemporary artist Natalie Jade. They will identify and describe how these artists express their ideas through artworks. Students will investigate the different ways artists communicate with their audience through their artworks. They will learn about the Wurundjeri creation story, and create artworks using subject matter from the story. Students will concentrate on identifying and using the art elements of colour, texture, and form. Students will experiment with different materials and techniques, including watercolour, sculpture, drawing, painting, folding, pasting, sculpting and weaving.             

Students will produce 4 artworks based on the whole school theme of Time.

These will include:                                                                                                                     

  • Van Gogh inspired seasons paper tree sculpture
  • Claude Monet inspired Life Cycle of a Frog artworks x2
  • Aboriginal DreamTime Story-Bunjil the Eagle    

PE

This term students will continue their remote learning through some interactive activities on Seesaw. They will explore a variety of movement ideas within a Gymnastics unit; working on ways to balance, turn, roll and travel using examples from multimedia resources. After practicing their skills they will respond to the activities by showing their learning through use of videos, photos and interactive activities.

 

Mandarin

In Term three, we are continuing to use Seesaw as the platform for remote learning. There are a range of activities for students to practise our oral Chinese skills at home. Students revise learnt phrases through multimedia resources online and use the technology to record their voices in Chinese. By doing some of the interactive activities,  they deepen their understanding in the structure of Chinese characters such as the colours, fruits and other topics relating to home learning environment. 

 

Music

This term, Junior students will continue remote learning through interactive musical activities, using Seesaw. They will add new chants, songs and rhymes to their repertoire and further develop their ability and confidence to match pitch and to sing alone. Students will explore changes in musical elements and respond to music, communicating what they enjoyed. They will respond to the music they listen to, through using musical language to communicate what is happening in a piece of music and through  drawing their response to music they hear.

 

Science 

In Biological Science the students will investigate and examine how living things grow. They  will investigate and compare the life stages of different living things, including similarities and differences between parents and their offspring. They will describe the characteristics and needs of living things in each life stage, and consider the relevance of this knowledge to their everyday lives, especially when caring for living things in the environment. They will engage in different activities through Seesaw and while working from home they will be given simple experiments to perform at home.They will use and further develop their skills of observation, questioning, prediction, planning, conducting, analysing, evaluating and communication.
