school life

environmental science

Environmental Science classes have been focussed on getting students outdoors, active and engaged wherever possible during lockdown and since returning to school.

It was wonderful to see some of the amazing things kids noticed about their own gardens, from tiny stick insects to massive trees, spiralling flowers and fantastic fungi.

There were also a few investigations to extend learning and plenty of gardening to do.

But the favourite family activity still seems to be cooking! What a great way to learn about science, maths, literacy, language and culture (plus a bit about sharing too)!

sports

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 students have been invited to compete at an inter-school soccer tournament in term 4 at John Fawkner College. I know this is an uncertain time with COVID restrictions changing weekly, but I have been assured by the organisers that all guidelines set out by Department of Education and Training and Football Victoria will be followed to ensure everyone at the event will be safe. The current guidelines state that for people under the age of 18, contact training can now take place and community competitions will be starting up again on July 4th. The competition will take place during school time and students will be required to travel on a bus which will mean there will be a small cost involved to compete in the competition.More information will be handed out closer to the date of the event, but for now I want to gauge student interest. Could you please discuss with your child to see if they are interested in competing and then complete the following google form (requires google account to access):

https://forms.gle/rP4qVHpdKqfCpMXZ8

. If you are having trouble accessing the Google Form, you can send an email to

nelson.thomas.w@edumail.vic.gov.au

 to express your interest.

maths

Hello BNWPS families! My latest blog post is up and it’s about best practice. The way we teach is constantly changing and so it should! We are always getting new information and being exposed to new experiences which means we have to change the way we deliver the curriculum. Have a read of my blog post about the changes in teaching, our BNW philosophy around numeracy and the role Jessie and I play in exposing staff to best maths practice.

Also, if you’d like to read about why the curriculum has changed, have a read of Peter Sullivan’s article https://research.acer.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1022&context=aer

seniors

This week the ⅚ students presented their passion projects to their classmates. There were some fascinating projects on things like, how to make dumplings, the art of karate,  skating and lots lots more! It’s been really cool to see what they have been learning about independently.

Individual Category:

Winner: Olive’s (BM) very cool LEGO classroom model- I loved all the little details you packed in there to really bring it to life, like the flowers, food and details on the walls.I just wanted to shrink down to minifig size and walk around in there! Great job Olive!

Notable Mentions: Raffi LD’s staffroom (the guitar was a nice touch!) and JB Solei’s light up canteen!

Siblings Category:Winner: Marco and Anthony Middles playground- I LOVED all of the SNOT work on your model- especially your trees and obstacle course! The use of the clear antennas to hold up the balls for the Downball games was very NPU too. Well done!

Notable Mentions: Gilby and Hugo’s school- I was very impressed by how you managed to depict both the inside and outside of the school as well as  I liked your creative use of plates to make trees and the Technic you used to make the basketball hoops!

Out of the Box Category:

Winner: Simon’s crazy awesome battle tricycle! Maybe this is how the kids get to school in a story you can write down? I Love all the little spikey details and driver’s cockpit- there some great SNOT and NPU going on in this model!

Notable Mentions: Mihnea RAH- I imagine this is a cool jet kids could take home after school so they get home as quickly as they can to build with their LEGO!  I loved the contrasting bright rainbow colours grouped together with the grey wings and grey pointy nose.
