German

German - Wir lernen Deutsch

Language learning experiences include reading and creating written texts, oral interactions and listening tasks.  Students communicate with peers to share ideas and opinions, relate experiences and express feelings. When participating in collaborative activities and classroom routines, students ask and respond to questions, working both independently and collaboratively to develop and enhance their vocabulary and language learning skills.

Students are encouraged to support their learning and build their confidence and fluency by working online with Duolingo, the world’s largest online language learning platform.  Duolingo can be accessed at home and is very easy to follow.  Each student has an account and their progress is monitored. Share in this learning at home. Parents can learn too!

Written tasks can be done on paper or students’ German books as well as on Google slides and docs. It is important to be able to use Chromebooks as a learning tool, not just for the sake of it.  Learning about the appropriate use of google translate as well as the more traditional use of bilingual dictionaries is a current focus.  In this changing world, google translate definitely has a place but does not always give us the best translation.  Being able to critically assess options and take advantage of the listening part of google translate will assist with confidence in speaking, supporting students to always strive for accuracy with pronunciation.

As with other subject areas in Torrens, Google Classroom has also become an integral of teaching and learning for German. Students are encouraged to check the Torrens Deutsch Google Classroom regularly. It is used to share announcements, pose questions, extend learning and give feedback. It is a valuable means of communication where additional information and resources can be shared and accessed by students at any time, not just during their language lessons.

Science

This term we will be learning about  Biological Science. We will begin by looking at  and classifying Living and Non Living things.

Next we will investigate some living things beginning with plants where we will work out what their needs are, as well as, their life cycles.

Following that, we will continue to investigate needs and life cycles by selecting some animals, including sea animals ( as the theme for Science Week in Week 5 is Under the Sea). Students will make predictions,  record their observations, conduct investigations, organise and present data, research and suggest explanations and reasons for their findings.

Next term, we will be learning about  The Earth and Space. We will look at how the earth's rotation causes changes ( eg day and night),

as well as how natural processes and human activities change the surface of the earth. Students will frame questions, predict outcomes and communicate observations, ideas and findings using formal and informal representations.

Coding will continue to be part of Science lessons, as well. It has been great to see so many students showing confidence, persistence, resilience  and grit when trying to problem solve using logical and critical thinking.

All students should continue to check the Science Classroom weekly, as it lets everyone know what we will be doing and what materials are needed.

Physical Education

This semester, children will continue to practise and refine fundamental movement skills through physical activity with a focus on teamwork, problem solving and sportsmanship.

Children will inquire into net and target base games using a tactical game based approach developing children's locomotor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and object placement and control. Skills will be transferred in various games such as badminton, table tennis and volleyball. They will reflect on new skills introduced using technical vocabulary and will be given opportunities to articulate strategies to be successful. Early Term 4  we are hopeful that children will once again  begin preparing for Sports Day which is now scheduled to be held on Thursday 5th November. Children will be given opportunities to participate in track, field and popular tabloid events, ensuring children can feel confident, successful and participate with enthusiasm on the day. Sports Day supports children to build confidence, foster communication between peers and learn important social skills like turn taking, sharing and encouragement in a safe, supportive environment. Throughout this semester children will be involved in badminton clinics, developing children's skills and techniques while collaborating with their peers in team challenges  . Active play has been very successful this year and continues every lunchtime in the gym, providing children with opportunities to be physically active, promoting social interactions in a safe, supervised environment. (Tuesday and Wednesday for Torrens students)

Premier's Be Active Challenge

Children at Lockleys North Primary School have been busy keeping physically active in this uncertain time, participating in school events such as Virtual Cross Country and resuming after school sport whether it be competitive, social or for leisure. Congratulations to all the students who have returned their PBAC booklets to school. Don’t worry if you haven’t because there is still time.

The Challenge

The challenge is to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity on at least 5 days of the week for at least 4 weeks. After 4 weeks of daily recorded physical activity children will receive a medal. Simply record your progress on the booklet provided, sign and return your registration form to the front office. The Challenge finishes on the 27th September 2020, so there is still time.

Students are reminded to wear suitable clothing and footwear to all PE lessons to ensure their full participation.

Our Torrens PE lessons are  Tuesday T18 and T19 and Wednesday T16 and 17.
