PYP in the Early Years

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) is a curriculum framework that begins in Kindergarten and continues all the way through to the Tens and Elevens

The PYP in the Early Years offers young children the opportunity to build curiosity, to be introduced to core skills for learning and to begin a journey of personal growth through an introduction to the lifelong traits of the Learner Profile. This curriculum framework is designed to support and align with national curriculums, and the PYP aligns perfectly with the Early Years Learning Framework: Belonging, Being and Becoming.

A core element of the PYP is ensuring the programme supports children in developing a sense of agency. In building a child’s sense of wellbeing and curiosity, the programme encourages children to ask questions, to find problems and to investigate solutions with the support and scaffolding of educators and the designed programme. Children are encouraged to take initiative and to explore their interests and wonderings. As a part of the programme we celebrate student action and encourage children to transfer experiences from home and the world at large to their explorations at school.  Together this allows children to build understandings around concepts and to make connections through these concepts.

By developing a sense of agency we are not only building a child’s sense of wellbeing but supporting them in building independence and intrinsic explorations of core skills; communication skills, social skills, research skills and self-management skills. These skills are a critical component of the PYP, as learners are constantly developing and refining them throughout their IB journey. The language is consistent and children have the flexibility to explore and develop this at their own rate and through a challenging, flexible and developmentally appropriate programme.

Kindergarten is the start of this journey and children are introduced to a learning environment that allows them to embrace and lead their learning through play and inquiry. Through the PYP they are introduced to terms that will be used throughout their learning journey.

The PYP curriculum framework aligns and supports the Preshil Kindergarten belief in authentic relationships and building a sense of community and belonging, and a connectedness to their environment.

The Preshil commitment to ‘rights with responsibilities’ begins in the kindergarten and fosters principles of mutual respect and cooperation, while learning in, about, and for our environment.’

Children are supported through the development of rich programmes to meet curriculum expectations of both the PYP and EYLF. They are encouraged to explore their world, to be curious and to be always building the traits to be lifelong, compassionate, respectful and international minded people of the world.

We are organising a PYP Information session for Kinder families via Zoom. We look forward to answering your questions and sharing more about this international curriculum framework.
