                                                       Winter is on it's way

Hello Everyone,

I don’t know about you, but I am feeling the cold weather recently as winter creeps in. It can be a challenge during the colder/wetter months to keep children occupied .  I have been fortunate to be able to teach wellbeing in the grade 3 and 4 classrooms in term 1 and 2 and the yoga activities have been very popular.  It was so rewarding to see so many students engaged in the yoga activity at the school’s open night last week and the student’s flexibility was very impressive.  Yoga has many benefits and each pose can be modified which makes it an all abilities activity.  If I can do it, anyone can.  It is a great form of exercise as it can be done anywhere.  Below are just some of the benefits of yoga.

Physical Benefits Of Yoga

  • Increases muscle and builds core strength for good posture and overall physical fitness
  • Helps to maintain flexibility and mobility in all joints and muscles
  • Supports and strengthens the immune system by reducing stress and stimulating the lymph system (the body’s highway of white blood cells which fight viruses and infections)
  • Develops sensory awareness – children learn to notice what’s going on in their body and mind while they’re in postures.

Social, Emotional and Cognitive Benefits

  • Increases attention span and improves concentration
  • More oxygen circulates round the body and brain during yoga practice
  • Can decrease anxiety and stress, particularly when done regularly
  • Encourages healthy sleep patterns with the practice of relaxing the body and lengthening the breath

There are many websites that offer in person and online yoga classes but I recommend Cosmic Kids Yoga as the instructor combines yoga poses with engaging stories. Below is a link that will take you directly to the channel.

Until the next issue, stay safe and warm.
