Learning Specialist Report
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 25th May at 11am, Aberfeldie Primary School joined more than one million people across Australia for National Simultaneous Storytime. Students gathered in the school library to listen to a reading of Family Tree by Josh Pyke, a book that explores family and community through the growth of a tree.
This year marked the 22nd year of National Simultaneous Storytime, and APS was proud to participate in this event, which aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, through the reading of an Australian children's book.
Respectful Relationships
This term, as part of our Respectful Relationships education, students at APS are focusing on positive coping and problem solving. This includes students identifying different types of coping strategies, such as positive self-talk. Students are also exploring problem solving skills as an important part of coping.
NAPLAN Online
Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students who participated in NAPLAN Online during May. We are so proud of the effort, perseverance and resilience students demonstrated when completing the assessments and navigating the new online platform. The student results are usually provided to schools in August. When the individual reports are provided to the school, we will contact families and the results will be sent home.
Well done to you all!
PAT Reading and PAT Maths Assessment
Over the last few weeks, students from Years 1-6 participated in two assessments, PAT Reading and PAT Maths. PAT Reading assesses student reading comprehension of words or sentences, as well as narratives, information, persuasive and procedural texts. PAT Maths measures students mathematical ability across number and algebra, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability. It addresses the proficiencies of fluency, understanding, problem solving and reasoning.
These online assessments are aligned to the Victorian Curriculum and have undergone rigorous trials and testing to ensure results are accurate and reflect student ability. They are used to measure student knowledge, skills and understanding, and support teachers to pinpoint where students are in their learning journey and what they need to progress.
