A wonderful day was had by 12 young and enthusiastic rugby league players in Inverell on Tuesday 24th May. The Guyra team was extremely competitive throughout the day, and they represented Guyra Central School showing great sportsmanship.
Guyra came up against Glen Innes in their first game and held the lead at half time 12 - 4
but unfortunately went down 20-12 at full-time. The boys then played a tough Warialda team and displayed tremendous fight in a very tight contest; Warialda winning 24-16. The final game was against Ross Hill and the boys were beginning to tire with no substitutes throughout day and the game became a "friendly" with some of Ross Hill's subs joining Guyra's team to finish the game off. It was a fantastic day, and a special thanks must go to Jason Allwood for taking the time to train and mentor the boys.
On Monday 23rd of May 2022 our Secondary Department held our Secondary Cross Country. This year due to wet conditions our Cross Country was held at Guyra Central School as opposed to Mother of Ducks Lagoon as in previous years. It was a great day for all the students who participated in the event.
Although there was a change of location for the event, Guyra Central School upheld our traditional challenges during the race. Oscar Atkin and Gwenisha Landsborough were winners of the 'Dash' (100m sprint) and Jack Soraghan and Brooke Grills were crowned 'King and Queen' of the hill (the first competeters to reach a certain point in the race, usually an uphill climb).
Some great results were achieved by our students. Many students have qualified to attend the North West Cross Country later in the year.
Age group results (who participated) and selections were as followed:

On Wednesday 25th May 2022 Guyra Central School a group of keen primary students travelled to Armidale UNE to run in the Armidale Zone Cross Country Carnival.
Our students were lucky enough to have a beautiful Autumn day to run and we are so proud of our students who represented Guyra Central School in Cross Country.
For many students Armidale Zone Cross Country was their first time participating in representative sport and every result from every student reflects the pride and effort they put in representing themselves and Guyra Central School.
Our students all showed terrfific sportsmanship, cheering and supporting other students in their races. Stage 2 student Corey Banfield is to be commended for his display of sportsmanship. A student from another school had lost their shoe during their race and continued their race without a shoe. Corey saw the student lose his shoe, Corey picked up the shoe and ran most of his race carrying the shoe for the other student. Well done Corey.
Stage 3 student Lincoln Atkin running in the 3k 11 year Boys became the Armidale Zone Champion in his age division. Congratulations Lincoln.
Guyra Central had three students who qualified to attend the Regional Cross Country Trial later this term. Congratulations to Thomas Ward (11 year Boys), Ava Williams (10 year Girls) and Lincoln Atkin (11 year Boys) who have qualified to attend the Regional Cross Country in Coolah.
Guyra Central School have 2 students who have successfully qualified to attend the NSW PSSA & CHSSA State Cross Country Trial in Eastern Creek Term 3, Week1. Congratulations to Lincoln Atkin (Year 5) and Jack Soraghan (Year 9) who will both attend the state finals.
Day 1 of our Secondary Athletics Carnival was a huge success with all of our secondary students getting involved and participating in events. Unfortunately we were unable to complete all of our field events on the day. We will be completing the unfinished events in the coming weeks.
All of results from the carnival will be available after all events are complete.
We had a fantastic day at our Primary Athletics Carnival! All of our students had a great time participating in all the track and field events. Our Secondary Touch team are heading to the state finals. The team had a very convincing victory, winning every game in the Central Schools 16s Touch GALA Day in Inverell earlier this term. Mrs Stephanie Belson spoke highly of the team, their performance and how enjoyable the team were to watch. The team will now travel to the Secondary Central School, NSW CHSSA State Knockout Championships in Dubbo in August. Good luck in the finals!
On a very chilly morning our Primary Soccer Boy/Girls Soccer teams braved the cold
travelling to Armidale to participate in the PSSA State Knockout GALA Day. Despite the cold weather we all had a fantastic day playing soccer against other schools in our region. Armidale City Public School defeated both of our teams in the first round of the knockout competition. We continued our day playing non-competitive soccer games and meeting students from other schools. Some of our team had not played soccer before so it was a good experience for us all.
Our girls Soccer team were lucky enough to be the first students to wear the schools new sports jerseys.
Thank you to Eunice Blair and Miss Sarah O'Hara for all the organisation for the day and taking us to the carnival.

On Wednesday the 1st of June, our under 14s boys team travelled to Woodville Oval in Uralla to compete in the annual Buckley Shield Rugby League Competition. Coached by Mr. Mal Gaukroger and assisted by Mr. Jason Allwood, the boys faced Farrer and Tamworth High School.
In the first game, the Guyra had the tough challenge of facing Farrer, despite a convincing loss, our boys put up a monumental effort to hold out the well-drilled side. Set after set, Guyra continued to make massive tackles and showed a true competitive and sportsmanlike spirit. Thomas Brazier proved its not about the size of the dog in the fight and put his body on the line, truly outlining his personal efforts as well as the rest of the team’s courage in facing such a tough opponent.
In the second game, we faced Tamworth High and the boys banded together with a highly convincing 50-0 victory! As the Guyra lads gained more and more confidence, we saw some brilliant forward running and plenty of beautiful backline plays. The halves pairing of Harry Purvis and Darcey Heagney gave us the platform for our boys to continuously break the line. Jason Mowbray’s barnstorming running kept the Tamworth boys on the back foot for the whole game. Guyra was gracious in victory and made our school extremely proud.
Unfortunately, we won’t be progressing to the next round but overall, it was a fantastic day out. Guyra Central School has a fantastic future in rugby league. All our players should be proud of themselves, particularly the boys who don’t play league on weekends and chose to lace up the boots giving our team the extra competitive edge.
Thank you to Mr Mal Gaukroger and Jason Allwood for coachig the team and a big thank you to Mrs Joanne Dullaway who kindly took photos.

On Thursday 9th June, Guyra Central School played Armidale Secondary College in the
second round of the Bill Turner Cup (U15 Boys Football). The game was played in chilly conditions on the new surface at Armidale Secondary College with a big crowd watching on from the stands.
Guyra started well and matched it with the opposition for around 10 minutes before Amidale Secondary College put in the first goal. Guyra were not to be too phased by this and hit back soon with a great through ball from Harry Purvis. Brendan Landsborough chased hard to put a great low ball pass the keeper to make the score 1-1.
The game remained close with both sides having multiple chances at the goals. Guyra goal-keeper Angus Dullaway made some great saves in the first half. Guyra’s defence dropped off slightly and allowed Armidale Secondary College two late goals to make it 3-1 at half time.
Guyra kept their heads up with the half time team talk and showed some positive play to begin the second half. Rave Brazier, Thomas Brazier and Aiden Brown put a lot of pressure on the opposition to force some corner kicks. Armidale Secondary College did sneak another goal through early but then Harry Purvis nailed one of the corner kicks, curling it into the goal and it was game on again at 4-2.
The Guyra boys played well against a much larger school team and kept trying for the whole game. However, the opposition class began to show through with 4 late goals to drag out the lead to 8-2. Guyra Central School were congratulated by the referee and the opposition coach for their sportsmanship throughout the game, particularly when the result was out of reach.
On Tuesday 21st June, the Guyra Central Under 14’s and Under 16’s participated in the Central School NRL 7’s. The day involved four games for each team and with many players unavailable due to sickness and other representative sport it was going to be a challenge for the boys.
The Under 14 team won all of their games and played extremely well throughout the day. Their last game was against Bingara which was going to be hard but the boys found another gear and romped home to beat them five tries to two.
The Under 16 team played against a solid side from Walcha and also a combination side from Bundarra and Ashford. Guyra was dominant in every game even though they only had seven players on the day. Some Under 14’s helped them through, but it was a fantastic effort to play these teams twice and not drop a game to be undefeated.
The boys are to be commended on their effort and behaviour on and off the field. Their ability was again noticed by NRL officials and the boys were always on hand to help and support each other as well as clean up after the day. They now progress to the State Central Schools finals day in Dubbo during Term 3.
The NRL Development Officers offer schools with numbers below 250 to participate in a small schools competition for Rugby League. This includes High Schools and smaller schools that wish to combine players as well. The winners of the day go on to a final series with schools from all around the state coming together for the day.
Guyra Central entered two teams in the competition, which were the Under 14’s and the Under 16’s. Both teams were a little under strength but were very keen to test their ability against some larger schools. This competition is played with 11 on each side which allows for some very open running and requires strong defence both in the middle and out wide.
The Under 14’s came up against Tenterfield first up and were outplayed by a much larger and well organised team. The boys tried extremely hard and played the first game with lots of courage as a few injuries did not help their cause. Unfortunately that was the only game they played but were offered the chance to join with other small schools for more football experience.
The Under 16’s once again proved how class and combination looks on a rugby league field. They scored some great tries in their first two games, which included beating Holy Trinity/Bundarra and also Warialda High School. This set up a final against Tenterfield High School.
Tenterfield had also won two games and had showed some that they had good defence and some solid ball runners. Once the game started Guyra came out of the blocks firing and Tenterfield were stunned at the speed, tenacity and ball movement of the Guyra Central side. They piled on five tries in the first half to set up a 30-0 lead. Guyra polished off the second half with a few more tries to take out the game 42-4. Not bad for only 20 minutes of game time.
The 16’s now go on to the State Small Schools finals day in Term 3.
2022 CHSSA Golf Championships & NSW All Schools Selection Trials
Congratulations to Harry Purvis who attended the CHSSA NSW Golf Championships during week 8. Harry travelled to Yamba to play in the championships over three days. With over 100 competitors in the event, Harry stepped up to challenge and represented Guyra Central School as part of the North West team. This the first time Guyra Central School has had a student participate in the state finals in Golf. Congratulations Harry.
2022 CHSSA NSW Opens Touch Championships
Brodi Campbell, Oscar Atkin and Archie Dowden attended the NSW Opens Touch State Championships in Wagga Wagga during week 8 as part of the North West squad. They played in the carnival over three days coming up against some of the best touch football players in NSW. Brodi, Oscar and Archie were some of the youngest players in the tough competition and all three of the Guyra Central School boys were valuable players to the North West team for the duration of the carnival. Congratulations to each of the boys for their commitment to school sport and their sportsmanship during the carnival.
