Level 1
It’s go, go, go in Level 1!
In Reading, the children have been focusing on identifying characters, problems and solutions and making pictures in their mind when they read or listen to stories.
The children worked very hard on a visualising activity, where they read a short passage from the book ‘Magic Beach’ by Alison Lester, and drew a picture they had created in their minds. So many incredible (and invincible) castles and towers were imagined! ‘Making a picture or mental image assists readers in understanding what they read by creating images in their mind, based on the details in the text and their prior knowledge.’
The children have been further developing their narrative writing skills by carefully planning a story using a story map, and then drawing the beginning, middle and the end. Following on from this planning process, the children write and share their stories. When writing, we also focus on our 5 Star Writing, incorporating punctuation, finger spaces, letter formation and using the dotted third lines.
In Maths, we have focused on the topics of place value and subtraction. Our Maths Rotations give students the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks, either individually, in pairs or in small groups. These tasks create an environment whereby the children can discuss their thinking, compare their solutions and learn from each other.
Love was certainly in the air as the Year 1 children created their Mother’s Day cards. There were lots of proud and smiling faces as students wrote, cut, coloured and created!
During Inquiry, we have discussed both the topics of ‘Water Safety’ and ‘Change over Time’. We are really looking forward to the Show and Tell presentations over the next few weeks as we focus on how transport has changed over time and predict what it might be like in the future. The children have also been busy designing and building a robot that can do something for them – for example, hold a pencil. Watch this space!
