Learning and Teaching

Rubrics to the Rescue!

Teachers use rubrics to support learning. They make assessing the students' work efficient, consistent, objective, and quick. Rubrics provide students with a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

They have concrete directions about what makes a good science project, a good persuasive writing piece, etc. Rubrics provided the Learning Space 1 Senior students with valuable information about the degree of which a specific learning outcome has been achieved. They were provided with concrete feedback that displayed areas of strength and areas in need of improvement.

The students used the feedback as a tool to further develop their abilities. Rubrics encouraged them to think about their own thinking and possibly about their own criteria for what is "good."  By using rubrics, the students were able to experience higher-level thinking processes.

Education in Faith/Inquiry

During Term 1, the Learning Space 1 Senior students had the opportunity to explore different sources of energy and how they transform relationships in our everyday lives. They examined how heat is produced, investigated types of contact and non-contact forces, and learnt how to describe the different sources of energy such as, light, electrical, solar and wind energy and its uses in our world today.

The students made connections between God, Jesus, and the spirit through the Holy Trinity, and reflected on the importance of their wellbeing to conserve energy and maintain relationships.
