Boarding News

Mr Nathan Short, Head of Weymouth House

Weymouth House

We have jumped straight back into a busy Term 2 for Weymouth House, with the start of winter sports and a busy academic calendar of assessment tasks.

Activities

With easing of Covid-19 restrictions, it has been great to see our activities program move closer to pre-covid normality. On Friday 29 April we held our first off-site indoor activity in almost 2 years! Boarders from both PLC and Wolaroi sites went to the movies at Odeon 5 cinemas. Students in 7-9 watched ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and students in 10-12 watched ‘The Lost City’. It was fantastic to see students not only enjoy the movie but also each other’s company.

This term in Weymouth we are focusing on Friday night cooking. In conjunction with our house committee and staff, we have planned to cook and prepare a range of culinary delights from around the world. These dishes will include; Mexican specialities, pasta and sushi, American style desserts and some good old fashioned Aussie camp oven classics are also on the menu. Be sure to check our progress on the KWS Boarding Instagram page.

Prep Support

As was the case last term, we continue to have excellent staff assisting with our Prep program. Our academic staff attend our Prep sessions, mentoring and assisting small student groups. Each prep staff member will work with an allocated group of students to monitor their progress and assist with organisation and planning of assessment tasks and general organisation.

ABSA Visit

Over the course of week 2 we have been lucky to have our friends from Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) visit the school to look at our boarding program. This will give our boarding community valuable feedback on what we do well and also some ideas to make our boarding program even better.

Richard and Jared will also be running an extremely valuable boarding staff professional learning workshop titled ‘Duty of Care, Book 1’. This is the first time we have been able to run this course since 2017. The course is designed to establish a national standard of basic knowledge and skills necessary to perform residential care duties effectively. Having previously attended this course in 2017, I can personally attest to what a great learning opportunity this will be for all boarding staff.

I very much look forward to seeing many of our parents and carers at our upcoming school events and sporting fixtures.
