Earlier this term, Year 6 student, Ella Kerdic, had the wonderful opportunity to work with Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Principal flautist. Masterclasses were organised at the Mitchell Conservatorium by flute tutor, Emma Knott. Ella describes the experience below.
"A couple of weeks ago, I went to a flute masterclass in Bathurst. Joshua Batty, a flautist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, was our teacher. He is an amazing flute player! I really enjoyed the masterclass - he showed me how to make my sound clearer, and we worked on one of my pieces that I am preparing for my exam. He had a lot of interesting things to say and gave me lots of great advice. It was so much fun!"
Last week, our Kindergarten musicians were exploring the concept of beat and rhythm. Students have been listening to how many steady beats they can hear in a song then identifying whether they can hear one sound (‘ta’) or two sounds (‘ti-ti’) on each beat. Once they can distinguish these sounds, they put the correct symbol under each beat. Our ‘detectives’ sing the song (with the magic pointer stick) and check that we have put the correct symbols in the correct places!
Here are Kindergarten Paddington hard at work with the song ‘Starlight’.
