Wurrin (Year 8 & 9) News

The Forest by Alex Mayall
It was all just a blur at that point. I didn’t know where I was. But I knew where I was going. Away. I came to a clearing. My lungs were screaming at me. ‘Stop!’ They were saying. ‘We’ve had enough!’ I stopped. Trees as tall as buildings towered menacingly all around me. Vines choked them, snaking their way to the forest floor. The canopy above was thick with leaves. No sunlight was getting in here. Although, there still seemed to be an eerie glow within the forest.
And so here I am. In a clearing. In a forest. Lost. Alone. Afraid.

Year 9 Maths Extension Program
In the past few weeks, the Wurrin Hub has initiated the new Maths Extension Class for Year 9 students. This class is made up of approximately 25 keen and high achieving maths students. It takes place two sessions a week on a rotating schedule and has so far been running for three weeks. The class will continue for the rest of the term and prepares students for the subject pre-methods which is taken in Year 10.
Taught by Mr. Piganis and Miss Clapperton, the class is currently learning about Linear Equations and Graphs, and the relationship between the two. Other topic that will be covered later in the course are Trigonometry and Algebra. Students have also been given addition work to complete in their standard Maths class.
The feedback from students and teachers involved in the extension program has been positive. ‘It’s a good challenge and enjoyable,’ said Michael Squires, a student in the class, while another student, Emma Holmes reported that it was a ‘Great opportunity for students who need extension.’ Mr. Piganis, who has taught most of the classes so far, also agrees that the class is progressing well and students are gaining better understanding of the topics covered.
All who are involved in the program look forward to further classes.
