Visiting Author - Steven Herrick

Last week, author and poet Steven Herrick, attended Mazenod College to inform and entertain Year 8 students about the magic of words and the techniques you can use to tell life’s stories. Steven is a skilled writer, widely regarded as a pioneer of verse-novels for children and young adults. Students responded enthusiastically to his lively presentation which was a timely opportunity as they commence their study of Australian poetry.

In the available minutes after the presentation students demonstrated some of their new-found skills to create their own pieces:

Topic: Camping

Camping and having fun, we assemble our tent

Camping and unpacking, we get ready to eat

Camping and eating, we get ready to hike

Camping and hiking, we drink water

Camping and walking, we talk.   (Ethan)

Topic: An Imaginary City

The fluorescent lights steal my breath

Flying cars and murky alleyways fill the city

Disco-like streets are very gritty

Is this a dream or a nightmare

I can’t tell because no-one’s there

I open my eyes and it’s all plain

I’m in my bed shivering.    (John)
