Literacy

Reading and Viewing

Students will be learning to identify aspects of an author's craft and the features of these aspects - i.e. author’s purpose or point of view.  We will be exploring these concepts with a lens on persuasive texts.

Students will also continue developing and consolidating the different reading comprehension strategies through the various texts.

Writing

The major focus of our writing this term will be writing to persuade. The students will be explicitly taught planning methods and the language and structural features of a persuasive text.

We will also continue to use the SMART spelling approach to explicitly teach spelling patterns to the students.  The students will also explore various grammar topics, such as plurals and learn dictionary/thesaurus skills.

Speaking and Listening

The students will continue to work on understanding that successful cooperation with others depends on shared use of social conventions, including turn-taking. We will continue to focus on learning to participate in  discussions  and negotiate in collaborative situations while using interactive skills, including active listening and clear, coherent communications.
