Years 5/6

No exceptions, another busy week for the 5/6 students. The 5/6 students were fantastic participants at the Interschool Sports Day on Tuesday and it was an overall great day for everyone!

Congratulations to everyone and well done on a great day.

Students have been working towards their individual goals in Reading, Writing and Maths. The level of work has been great and all students should be very proud of their efforts. Here are some examples of the wonderful work our students have been doing.

Practising putting full stops in the right places followed by a capital
Working on proof reading and editing
Remembering to include the place holder zero and the tens carrying over
Asking and noting down questions during reading
Using different strategies to really understand a text
Practising to include the zero place holder in vertical multiplication
Taking notes when reading to be summarise the key details
Practising to add the tens in when adding or multiplying
Ensuring the zero place holder is in place when vertically multiplying

An interesting conversation straight from the classroom to think about....

"Wouldn't it be so much easier if we just had to add an 's' to words to make them plural?" asked Hughie as the whole class nodded and agreed.

"YES!" echoed the 5/6 class.

"Yes, it would be but we will keep practising the different plural rules and then you won't need to think about it. You will just be spelling them correctly and with the right plural ending. Keep going." Mrs B reassured.

Students have been continuing to build their confidence, accuracy and speed when typing and this week we tried out a new tutorial website https://www.typingclub.com/ . Students can watch videos and work their way through little activities and games to practise their skills. It was quite the challenge at the start to try and not look at the keyboard and just use the 'bumps' on the f and j keys to return our hands to 'home row' but by the end of a few levels students commented that it was getting easier and easier. The Year 5 students are completing the Naplan Writing test online this year and hopefully will feel very comfortable with their typing skills.
